Trying to figure out the best way to go about this. My carpet is disgusting in the e34 and I couldn't find any places that had the custom molded sets that would fit my car. Has anybody redone their carpet? How hard was it?

You mean removed and replaced with factory or....removed and replaced with an aftermarket set ?
I'm almost ready to pull my donor cars factory carpet ( very nice shape)......and it does require the lower dash and FULL componets to be pulled as far as I can tell......and this is ALL thats left inside right now.
The factory 2 piece has a complete molded foam insulator pad thats pretty heavy.
If you opted for an aftermarket set....I bet they would require you to reuse the old pad/insulation.

The thing is, I'm looking for black carpet to match the project I'm getting ready to do. I'm fine with reusing my padding, I just need some clean (preferrably new) black carpet and I'm not sure if I could just buy some from the store and do it myself or if it would have to be molded

off topic, are you shipping my parts out today? :)

I've looked into this myself and gotten nowhere in terms of finding a ready-made one. I couldn't even find an upholstery shop that would do it. I figured the only thing I could do was dye it, which I mean to get around to eventually.

I wanna know about your project :).

someone on here has had success dying the carpet black. Anyone remember who it was? There is a specific product made for this, sorry but I cant remember the name:(. I think its related to the stuff you use to dye/restore leather

If your looking for a quick way, Id suggest going around to the local upholstery shops. Someone must be willing to do the job.

There's at least an inch of foam backing, of varied depth and density/composition, on the underside of the carpet. It acts as an insulator and as a support.

I don't think separating the foam from the original carpet will be viable, and the floor of the car isn't exactly level without it.

I would find a set of replacement carpet if the original is beyond salvaging. Removal, in one piece, requires taking everything out including the heater box. A few well placed cuts will avert the necessity of removing the heater box.

They sell some floor mats for our cars at a reasonable price. Other than that, you could always use an extractor to clean your current ones, but if you are looking for more of a restoration, than just buying new ones would probably be the best way to go. I believe they run up to $140/(set of 4) for the 'ultimate' mats which are suppose to be very durable, ultra thick, and very soft.

true, with the mats in place the only part of the carpet that is visible is the tunnel sides inthe front and the tunnel in the rear.

You not only have to remove the lower dash you have to pull the heater core and all its components. It is a shitty job. I just cut mine up next to the heater core. When you replace the carpeted lower dash pieces it covers that area, as well as it holds the carpet in place. Will save you hours.. Just my .02 cents

yes....after looking closely at it,I agree with Lowell. One could probably make a few precise razor blade cuts close to the heater unit and then use some 3M spray adhesive to insure a good hold down in those areas.

Jamey.....wanna' buy my black nice factory carpet when I get it pulled ??:)

A black factory carpet? :confused What car did it come in?

Robstah did it to an E36. There's a thread somewhere, but I've lost the link.

No worries, good information is always worth posting a few times.

BTW -- I cut this car last spring, good for a visual --

Didn't feel like pulling it all the way down, some guy got a great deal on that half of the car, though :)

Pretty much it's going to be a black/tan two tone interior. Last detail I have to work out is the subwoofer... too big for the trunk but I don't know if I necessarily want to take out the back seat for a blowthrough :(
