If you have the 6 speed, I'd get a 3.64. It's great for the track and manageable on the freeway. You can also do a 3.46 if you have a 5 speed.

Consider diffsonline.com or maybe an E46 diff.

actually one of my friend had installed a 3.64 on his evo, i like the in town cruise, but at highway speed, it is a bit high to my likings. Do you have any idea from which model that i can get a 3.46 from with the type 210 diff size?
thanks in advance

that's a new one. Never heard of that before. What does that refer to?

Jonathan

p.s. My 3.64 and 6 speed run at 3200 rpm's at 85 mph on the highway. It's just purring at that point.

the euro M3 has a 210mm crownwheel in the diff, as used in V8 and V12 5 and 7 series cars, and M5's, US M3's (all) and euro 3.0L M3's have 188mm crownwheel, as used in most later model 6 cyl BMW's

the std ratio is too tall unless u drive on the autobahn.

the 3.64 ratio out of the e46 m3 would be a good selection, but according to my calulations specifically for 1/4 mile work either the taller 3.15:1 would hit near peak revs in 3rd, or the 4.10:1 would hit peak revs in 4th.

If u still have the speed limiter 155mph one connected u could still reach it in 6th with the 4.10 ratio

I have a 5 speed, im looking for a 3.46 LSD, does anyone know if the ones that diffsonline, for the US Spec M3, can be used on the Eurospecs ?
I read someone saying on the US Spec forum that they are not the same diffs

Only the Euro 3.2s have the larger diff. All Euro 3Ls have the same size diff as the US spec cars.

i'm running a 3.91 with in my 3.2/6speed car. I love it, car is so much better with shorter gearing.

i've done this mod on my ex 3.0 m3. That was by far the best bang for the bucks modification. No wonder people said this is a poor man supercharge!!!
you can locate one pretty easy on ebay...they should be coming off from the early 6 cyl cars like the e21, e30, e32, e28...
last time i paid 150 usd for the ring and pinion. Don't pay anything more than that as i noticed some people trying to rip others off at 300 usd!!!
If you are getting it from a junkyard, have the guy take the ring and pinion out for you, most of them will do it for free because they can sell the casing for money!!!
go for it...i can't stop laughing after i got the car back from the garage with the 3.46 on it!!!...it was just great fun!!!

WOW 150 ?

Ive been browsing the net, finding those lsd´s at anything less that 1200 (diffsonline or matrix)
Didnt know they sell the ring and pinion only.

I have 3.62, installed gears from a E46 M3.

Imho that's one of the finest ratio's for a streetcar:
1. You can still reach unlimited topspeed as theoretical limit will be around 300 km/u with these gears
2. At highways (well at least in holland) you will be around 120 km/u at 3000 RPM. S50B32 has most torque between 3000 and 3500 RPM, so that makes 6th a very usable gear on the highway.
3. overtaking is a lot faster on B roads.

On long sprints you won't see any performance gains, ie from 0-200 km/u or 100-200 km/u you gain nothing. 80-120 gets faster though, 5 sec vs 6 sec original. That's faster then a E46 M3 :)

Am I going to be disappointed with my 5psd and 3.38lsd? :help

bedema

i thought you have a pretty good ratio...a 3.38 should be good for everyday driving
on track...i am sure a 3.91 setup will be a lot faster
can i ask how do you have a 3.38 ratio? Is that the american auto m3 setup?

It was removed from an automatic '99 M3 convertible. All 96-99 M3 automatics came with the 3.38lsd.

I think I will eventually bump it up to a 3.46, but maybe if I have enough work, I can get a 6spd and a 3.91. That likely won't happen until the summer tho.

Was that a plug and play installation? Which car was a donor?
I know that the differential from the S50B32 doesn’t fit without modifications in the S50B30 because of different mounting.

3.64 was from E36 323i auto, I swapped out the carrier for an LSD carrier.
the 3.46 LSD I have is from E28, I have to remove all the internals, and install in E36 housing

question on LSD

Had my car in the air last night doing suspension adjustment and wanted to check my LSD. Held one tire and spun the other, but had immediate lockup. Held one tire and spun the driveshaft and had the same outcome. I have seen lsd before where it gave about 1/8 or 1/4 turn before lockup. Does this indicate anything, does it have solid rear end, or does it take a certain ammount of force to slip???
