Hello again,
I have been having the same problem as I mentioned before, now it happens more frequently. For those of you who dont know, my 1995 530i will be cruising smoothly down the road when suddenly it seems to shift to 3rd gear, radio shuts off, rpm gauge stops working, anti lock light comes on as well as check engine, trans program appears along with check manual. I shut the car off and try to restart only to find that the car is dead and needs to be jumped...this doesnt happen all the time, just when it feels like it. I need your opinions before I take it to the mechanic. Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!

Did you check the grounds and voltages as I mentioned in this post (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showpost.php?p=11260936&postcount=7)?

Sounds like your trans is toast. How many miles? 3rd gear IIRC is limp mode gear.

The tranny shifts fine normally, Im being told it could be a speed sensor or low voltage. I hope its not toast!

Mine does this from time to time but once I shut it off and restart it, it usually runs fine. Check the speed sensor. Tranny is not toast...

Your transmission is fine!

Check the alternator, there's a very good chance it's dead and not maintaining the battery. Same thing happened to me and just about every warning light that could, did go off. Once shut off it needed a jump also. Your problem is definitely electrical. Search the forums, there's a lot in here. Good luck!

My gut told me it wasn't toast...thank god! I will check the electrics tonight. Could I change the speed sensor myself without a hoist?

yes the speed sensor is on the diff alittle hard but it shuold take about1/2 to an hour, and the other under your shifter, that should take 10 minutes

So theres two sensors, one in the diff and another near the shifter?
