View Full Version : How long to charge key?

My dealer told me when I picked up the car to be sure and use both key fobs occasionally in order to keep them charged.
I'm the only person who drives my car (girlfriend does not drive standard and does not want to learn - whatever). Because I have been using the same fob since I picked it up, I've spent a lot of time customizing the seat/mirrors/audio settings exactly how I like them and they are all saved in that key.
Put in the other one today, and of course all my settings are gone. How long do I have to charge this key before I can go back to the other one? The second key is really only for an emergency, but I do want to be sure it will work in such a case.
(And as a side question, is there any way to "clone" them so they have all the same memories, without trying to adjust everything just the same manually?)

I too am the only driver, so unless the fob I use breaks or gets lost, I have no use for the other one, so I don't bother charging it. You will still be able to open the car with the traditional key in the fob and the car will still start if the fob is completely discharged I believe, so no worries there.
The settings follow the fob, so if you go back to using the old one your settings should be back. BTW it saves the settings when you lock the car and recalls them whern you unlock so I always wondered if you could transfer settings by unlocking with one key then locking with another that you want settings transfered to. Not sure if that will work, but may be worth a try.

Great question! I had a HELL OF A TIME setting the key functions for both keys even with the owners manual in my lap 6 months ago. Now my wife is complaining her key does not work. Seats, mirrors, etc.

I just mentioned it, just lock the car with the desired fob and it will save th ecurrent settings on that fob.

I must have missed something, does it say that in the owners manual? I have to admit, I was interested in driving the car, not the manual.

They say that it takes over a year to discharge a key that is not used. It takes 30 hours to completely charge a discharged key.
-this is for keys as of MY '00. I'm not sure if it holds true for the brand new keys.
