Anyone here ever run this intake or heard of someone using it? it seems fishy because the stock intake has alot of stuff hooked up to it and this one looks like its completly different.

Don't know about the 6's, but for my 530 it is rubbish. I bought my car with one installed, then put the old factory box and filter back in. End result, sounds cooler with the K&N intake but sounds almost as cool and runs much better with the stock box and filter.
Im sure if properly heat sheilded and set up you get some beni's, but not enough to make it worth while.
no.. won't do too much for you. You have an AFM.. which restricts your airflow regardless of what you put there. The stock box is sufficient for the AFM setup. Spend teh money on a chip

The BMW airbox is about as good as it gets for the M50 E34

useless . . you need a new "pipe" . . not a cold air intake

It's an m30.. but the stock box is good.

Keep it stock, keep it stock, keep it stock. If you do have an AFM, what E34N said, save the money, buy a chip, and a Miller MAF upgrade.

+1 +1 +1 Stock!!! particularly if you do a MAF conversion.

I put a similar looking setup in my 90 525i M20 engine, seemed to produce marginal gains (I also rigged up a duct to feed air directly to the filter through the opening behind the headlights) louder sound though. The price is good and with an M20 you need everything you can get. You need to ask yourself if you want to clean and re-oil the filter as needed, kind of a hassle.

Again.. you have an AFM. Your airflow is not being restricted by the intake... it's the AFM. Gains? I'm gonna ask for proof (dyno).. or I call BS. Most likely PHP (Placebo Horse Power)

what if you have a stock air box, put you put a K&N filter? is that still bad?

I'm going to be doing a dyno pull with the stock filter, then with a K&N in 2 weeks. I know the air wont be forced in like in a driving scenario, but any gain should be good.

There was one done (with a foam filter and no heat shield) in the last Total BMW on an E30 325iT that gained around 3-5bhp (don't have it in front me)

I'll be sure to post up my results!
Stock everything except I'm running no muffler.

Well even-though i got the K&N setup for free, I threw it on and its crap, the K&N quality is horrible, the adapter for the vane air flow doesn't seal flush, the gasket is to small so it leaks, the bracket to hold up the vane is also useless, had to custom fab. The filter is tiny like it belongs on a lawn mower. I'm glad i didn't pay for it, so the result is I'm running stock again.

i dont think k&n is really crap, just these cars we have are built with top notch stuff already, plus these are bmws here, not honda civics. its kinda hard to increase power easily.

a k&n filter is on my christmas list. its just a replacement filter so i dont think it would decrease any performance. i may just try it out, because mine right now its getting bad. plus if these filters harm or decrease performance for sure, couldn't you bring K&n to court or something. they have Guaranteed Horsepower results, and stuff.

I know most people are going to say the k&n cone is useless if it's not shielded correctly and especially with our afms. but... if you were to couple this with the Miller MAF and shield it well from the heat, do you think it could be somewhat beneficial?

I've thought about this as well.. but these are my thoughts on this.. I've already converted my AFM to a MAF... but I'm not going to change my intake. BMW designed it well.
it's already shielded from the engine due to the placement.
it has an inlet that is close enough to the front of the car (as far as you can get a cone to)
the surface area is already large (compared to honda/acura/etc where most would use the cone)
the AFM is only an excuse for m20 and m30 engines.. yet, m50/m60's don't benefit much from cones as well...
I can use the money on other mods that would make a better difference..at least to me. (if I wanted 2-5 extra HP..... why not spend the extra penny and get a 540/6 or M5.. and get 40+ hp.....:devillook)
But then again.. that's me.

yeah, that's true. well, i already have the cone filter from my dumb days when i bought before researching. I found what looks to be a decent heat shield on schmiedmann and am considering buying it just for fun after i get my MAF and put the k&n cone back on there.
this is a pic of the heat shield made by K&N. looks decent.
