View Full Version : What's a good medium polish to use before swirl remover and glaze?

My paint is somewhat more neglected at this point than it's ever been on my cosmos E36 M3. Usually when I do my quarterly detail I would do the following..

1. clay
2. swirl remover (for several years I've used 3M Swirl Remover for black cars with my PC)
3. glaze (for several years I've used 3M Imperial Hand Glaze)
4. P21S (sometimes I have use the Zaino system stuff before this step)

anyway I have troublesome spots and generally my paint isn't in as good shape as usual. It's cosmos black and the paint is soft so I don't want to be harsh but I would like to do an additional step this time before step 2. I want to use a heavier cut swirl remover, something a bit more harsh than the 3M or meguires swirl remover together with a medium cut yellow pad on my PC 7424. Any ideas what polish I could use that would be fairly safe? I have some 1Z polish that I had for my other car. Is a 'cleaner' too harsh...should it not even be considered?

This is my 1st post.

So here we go hope this helps you Brianc.

I have owned many BMW's Once you have one you know.

This is what I found works very well. I currently have (2) BMW's 96 328i dark green with tan int. 170,000 mi, and my baby 2001 740i black on black 55,000 mi.

1- 3m h.d. rubbing compound with p/c use # 4 (orange pad)on the top of the car go front to back on side panels go up and down( very important on dark colors to do this way) use detail spray to lube your pads prior to product on pads for much better flow accross the panels

2- 3m micro-finish same way , use a blue pad #5-6 on p/c. all product must break down on finish , then buff and check results with clean micro-fiber , do the same above on step #1.

3- I change from 3m to glare products at this point.

Wash the car down with a heavy solution of soap to water, use car soap not dawn, etc.

4- I use glare spider at this point, use a clean blue pad and the p/c set on #5 , spray the pad with glare saharra, rub the spider in till it is just about gone it will be sucked into the paint, you can do the whole car at this point( out of the sun)buff off any res.

5- spider 2nd coat, same way this time it is laid on your paint more like a wax just coat with clean blue pad, let sit on paint for 30 min. buff off, get blown away.

6- 1st coat of glare pro polish, just like spider but with a black pad #6 on p/c rub till gone all over paint work, wait 15 min, buff.

7- 2nd coat just like spider p/c #6 black pad all over all paint work ( like all products do not get on trim !!!!!) glass is fine on final coat. let sit for 30 min.

re -apply glare polish in 30 day's, it will last at least 1yr.

after all the prep you will never do it again, just top off with the polish.

Let me know how you make out.
