I am about to take delivery of my 328. I hear theres a break in period. If whats it about? Is it really that critical in the future performance of the vehicle?

Yes there is a breakin period. Check your owner's manual. For my 335i there was a max rpm as well as the mileage and max speed. Don't recall exact numbers, something like 4500 rpm and 100 rpm. Found you really had to keep and eye on the rpm, was easy to exceed.

Virtually all car manufacturers will publish their break-in period and criteria. It is in the manual. I would suggest following the schedule even though there are times when you want to let your hair hang out!

They recommend 1200m/2000Km keeping it under 4500RPM and staying off cruise control. I've hit 1200Km and have started to enjoy the car, pushing it further and further every day. Now it's spirited driving every day. I wouldnt worry too much unless you planned on bring it to the drag strip or something like that. I plan on changing the oil at 2000Km. Who cares what BMW says.
