View Full Version : any tricks for Alternator installation on 525?
I have a 95 525i and was trying to change the alternator on it but the thing doesn't want to fit. The clearance for the bottom bolt is so tight I can't seem to get it all the way down into place. I wanted to hit it with a hammer to get it in place but thought that might be a bad idea since electronics are usually some what delicate. Anyone have any bright ideas or little tricks that might be helpful?

Go ahead and hit the bushing with a hammer. Be careful with the plastic intake backing when you do it. It shouldnt take much to get what you need. When you in stall the bolt back on the bottom it will suck the bushing back where it should be. I did mine yesterday and took only about 20min. to put it back in and hooking everything up.

You'll be ok, those are electrics, not electronics. An alternator is made to live in a harsh environment, a little tapping won't kill it. Just don't give it the old "hulk smash" with a 20lb sledge and you'll be ok.
Thanks for the advice. I'll try to stay away from the sledge hammer.
