View Full Version : Looking at 335i and have a few questions

Looking at the 335i. What offers better performance, the 6spd manual, or the 6spd auto w/paddle shifters?

What is a fair price to pay for a fully loaded 335i?
Does the non-sport package come with an oil cooler?

Thank you

Manual vs. Auto is widely debated here. Depends what you like. Do you sit in daily traffic all day? Do you like driving stick? Auto is slightly quicker in stock form. Don't how much quicker (if any) the manual gets if you remove the clutch delay valve, as many people have done.

I've been quoted $2100 off retail for any sedan I could build from one dealer. I've heard of people getting $1000 to $1500 off coupes now. Much better than a year ago.

All 335i's now come with the oil cooler.

I bought my 2008 335 coupe almost $3,000 off sticker. 2008 sedan should sell for $500 over invoice, especially if you wait for the first snow fall and then go to the dealer. Xi or i makes no difference pricewise.

Also, you want a fully loaded 335 and not get sport package? Are you out of your mind? If you do that you'll lose awesome wheels, extra engine cooler, and the awesome sport seats. That's one option that's a must and only at $1,000.

Oh no, not another manual vs. auto debate. :)

Auto it is then. Yes I sit in a lot of traffic. Didn't know the sport option was only $1000. I've been looking at so many cars lately it gets confusing all the packages and prices

Just so we're on the same page. $500 over invoice= what is invoice?
$3000 over sticker= what was sticker?

thanks

Okay the basics of car buying:

The invoice is the amount the dealer pays for the car. This is probably not exact because dealers make money in other ways from the manufacturer but for your purposes assume it is. You can look up dealer cost on various websites such as edmunds.com

Sticker is the MSRP, Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price. There is a sticker on the window of the car with the price, hence the term. The poster was referring to under sticker, not over.

Thanks hunter. I know what the terms mean, but I wanted to see how much dealers were selling these cars at. I wanted to see if they were marked up at all. I'll check out edmunds

I bought my 07 335i Sedan in October 2006
It had all options except Nav and Confort Access.
The MSRP was 46,500 I ended up paying 44,250 for the car and thought that was a good deal.

The dealership was Kuni BMW in Beaverton Oregon.

I am interested in the coupe. Is the sedan generally more $$$ ?
Thanks for the post

Also the "invoice price" is what a dealer would pay if they bought ONE car...they buy thousand :) That's how dealers can sell at invoice because that wasn't the actual cost for that car.

But with that said...you'll be lucky to get it down to invoice.

Also, if you like MT...I'd go with MT. People seem to complain about the Auto a bunch here with hesitation, surging and other problems. Most MT owners are happy, although a few will tell you to remove the CDV, I don't feel you need to–just learn the timing of the car.

I have one of each. The step is the wife's and the manual is mine. The nice thing about the N54 is the tremendous low end torque. That means that in traffic there is less need to shift. This somewhat minimizes the negatives of having stick in a busy city. I live in LA and have no regrets about getting the manual.

However, I suspect the automatic is more well suited to this car (blasphemy, I know...). It keeps the boost on during upshifts and is well matched to this engine. The paddles work brilliantly. It is by far the best automatic I have ever driven. However throttle tip in can be jerky if you don't pay close attention. I also find that the brakes occasionally make creeping forward difficult in the automatic.

I would say that performance is roughly equal.

According to BMW, all 335i's now have oil coolers.

Expect to pay 500-1,000 over invoice. However please consider Euro Delivery. It is a great adventure!!!

I thought I was a purist and wouldn't settle for anything less than a 6 speed manual but after trying the steptronic out I was pretty impressed! The 335i is an awesome ride and nothing else compares...I have test driven them all...for the money you can't beat it!

It was commented throughout the thread about the oil cooler being included in all BMW 335i's. I received the following from BMW NA about my vehicle. I suspect that this applies to the sedan and coupe as well.

"Thank you for contacting BMW of North America, LLC regarding your upcoming 2008 BMW 335Cic. We appreciate your enthusiasm for our vehicles.

As a running production change, the oil cooler was introduced in the 335i vehicles with Sport Package and automatic transmission starting in March of 2007. The vehicle must have the Sport Package, automatic transmission and 18" inch wheels to get the oil cooler in the 2008 model".

To be absolutely sure for your vehicle. Just call BMW NA. They are very helpful and are quick to respond to your phone call or email.

The sport package would be at the TOP of my option list. I can't belive anybody would
buy one without it. Got to be NUTS to not get the sport pkg. IMO.
In tests the auto is only a tenth or 2 slower then the manual. Its all about what you
prefer. I saw one test where the auto ran 0-60 in 4.8 seconds. I originally wanted a
coupe, but after looking at many, I want a white 335xi sedan with sport pkg. manual,
leather and upgraded stereo. Don't need all the other crap. Keeps the price down.

Some people don't like the slightly rougher ride or the narrower seats and others don't care for the enhanced dynamics and would skip the extra cost. I am not one of those, but I do understand that different people have different tastes, and some think we are nuts to get the sports package. That's what I like about BMW (v.s. say Inifiniti, Lexus or Acura), they give you a choice to pick and choose albeit you do pay a bit more, but to be fair the ability to pick and chose does also costs BMW more in terms on assembly process and its logistics. Kudos to them for sticking to this.

some just know that they will drive too fast on pot hole ridden nyc streets and 18's are not an option. i'm pretty big so i don't think i'll miss the sport seats. i'd prefer stiffer or better yet adjustable suspension but the 18's were the deal breaker.

Yeah NYC is terrible, not as bad as Montreal though. That being said, I think I broke a shock on my brand new e36 in 97, luckily it was coevered under warranty. They said it was a manufacturing default, but I have a feeling it was NYC streets to blame since it occurred right after my trip there. Love the city though, been a while since I went there although I've been to Jersey a lot.

Yeah, I love the Sport Package suspension and wheels, but I live in Delaware. Every time I visit our friends in Brooklyn I understand why someone would buy one of these without sport package. It is a rough last 10-15 miles after the NJTP.
