How are you using it? It's pretty simple once you know what you're doing.

Not much to it really. I spray an area with some qd then gently rub the clay back in forth in short motions. You'll be able to feel the contaminants as you move the clay across the paint and then it gets smooth when they're gone (in the clay now). Make sure you use plenty of lubricant and you should be set.

Are you using a lube?

I have lots of experience with claying cars because I work as a detailer at a BMW dealership, so i'm not making this up.
First off, How you can tell the difference is by putting your hand in a ziploc baggy and rub your hand across the paint, it will feel gritty and roughish, To correctly clay the car: rinse the car off (to get rid of all the loose dirt) then lubricate the car with clay lube, or even car washing soap works fine. Then just rub the clay across the surface like you're wiping it all over with a cloth.(Flats 1st(hood,top,trunk lid), upper sides and front and back second, and lower sides, behind wheel wells and side skirts last) As you go along be sure to stretch and fold the clay because the clay will collect contaminants and grit and you don't want to rub what you've just cleaned back into the paint. While you clay it depending on how dirty the car is the clay will make a high whining scratch sound like rubbing your nail across a record, this means that the clay is collecting alot of contaminants. (btw the contaminants are little tiny spikes of metal from your rotors and train tracks and everything where metal rubs on metal.)
After you clay the entire car (FROM TOP TO BOTTOM! VERY IMPORTANT!) take the plastic bag and run your hand along the surface again, it will be smooth as silk, and your paint will have a beautiful mirror finish. Never underestimate the power of the clay!
