View Full Version : Restoring e30 Spoiler - How to Prep/Paint Rubber?

I just picked up an e30 spoiler that I plan to mount on my e21. The spoiler is structurally intact, but the factory paint on the rubber spoiler is cracked and faded.

What would be the best way of prepping this spoiler for a fresh coat of paint? I've tried Googling the subject and understand that I should go with some sort of primer that preps porous/rubber surfaces. And also I should use some sort of "flexible" acrylic paint.

I don't have access to a booth or "super-pro" paint guns. I was hoping I could finish this project with rattle cans. :D

I need suggestions on:

1) Prep: Best method to remove old paint and prep surface?
2) Tools: What brands of paint/primer would be good for this application?
3) Any other words of advice?

Thanks!

Have a look at paintworldinc.com.

As well as being a supplier to paint/body shops, they cater to "weekenders" who want to do their own work. I recently spoke with one of their people on the phone, about a project that I was about to start. He advised me extensively on how to go about it, and while he could have easily sold me his products (Dupont Clear Coat and a few other things) it turned out that I could get the stuff I needed locally and didn't end up buying from them.

In addition to selling rattle cans of clear coat and custom mixed (for your paint code) base colors, they also handle primers designed for flexible surfaces. (I have no affiliation.)
