My 99 M3 after much help from the forum I finally come down to why I think my car has about a 25-35 horsepower loss. I think its down to either the replacing the vanos or just the vanos solenoid. At around 3,000 to 3400 rpm car makes a howling sound and a faint vanos sound (marbles in a can) but very very faint. I an not sure if its the vanos howling. (its not comiong from the cold airintake either. So do you think I should replace the whole vanos unit.

+1 if you have money for it :) otherwise unplug solenoid and see if there is a difference. That's the way to determine if the solenoid isn't working properly.

DJ genius just unplug the wire that comes out of the back of the solenoid and then Ishould drive the car around the block and see if there is a diffrence. That won't hurt the car?

See the wire coming off the solenoid?
Follow that to a connector and disconnect.
