so yeah ive been toying with the idea of swapping off my us bumpers to the euro style with the grinding and cutting and drilling and welding and all of that...but last night completely changed my mind about all of that i think..
so im making a left turn onto my street, i get the green arrow so i start to turn, then a minivan runs the red light and hits me almost head on...:mad i proceeeded to rip up my e brake, jump out of my car (with the gf screaming at me "get back in the car your going to go to jail") run over to the guys mini van, rip open his door and started screaming at him, "you motherf*^&^ are you retarted, im going to smash your head in, you know the usuall borderline flipping out stuff...hehe ugh....its like someone hitting my children or hurting my family, my car aint worth a dime to the insurance company and if there was severe damage they would just total it, so naturaly i was ready to throw down and whoop this guy into oblivion, but instead i told him to pull his motherf$%#$ b$% a$$ mini van into the parking lot next to the intersection and i proceeded to do the same...i look at my car under the light and there was NO damage, i MEAN NO damage, just a little scuff on the rubber bumper...so thank god for US bumpers...im not switching mine, even if euros do look better...
and the guys minivan, well, his bumper had split, his fender was pushed in in such a way that it had cracked his headlight....so i told the guy he was very lucky that my car was not damaged, we exchanged insurance info and filled out a report and went about my buisness.
long story short,
my 6er gets hit by a douche running a red light
no damage to my car,
minivan is screwed up
35 year old guy almost got murdered
life is normal again..
im starting to think since ive had problems with my car three weeks in a row its about time to put it up for the winter even tho there is no snow...hmmm
just sort of venting and spreading the word that us bumpers saved my ass

Glad everyone is ok!!!!
nice car btw
I am glad your car wasnt hurt.
The lady that rear-ended me couldnt understand why I was so pissed. After she said "its just an old car" I got so mad she would get out of her car. I kinda feel bad now. :rofl
The rubber is held on by 6 mm nuts that go through the aluminum bumper. The rubber peice has studs in them. You should be able to still get them new.

Use acetone to try and remove the scuff from the bumper trim if it is not cut.

wow, good thing...but look at it this way, would the van have hit the euro bumpers in that situation? They dont stick out as far haha. Just kidding. Glad to hear you and the car are alright, couldve been way worse.
That is the biggest argument in keeping the u.s. bumpers over the conversion (except for the work involved). You have a better chance of not loosing everything in some minor collisions. Im keeping mine, but i think im gonna paint them and tuck them about an inch. And instead of bumpershocks, im just gonna weld or bolt them in place.

I would like to see pictures after you collapse the shocks on the bumpers. We used to do that back in the 70s, but there was always a gap between the bumper and the side trim to fill in at the edges on each side of the car. Also, remember that without the shock absorbers, you will transfer the shock of minor collisions to the frame.

I bet your friend with the mini van is going to be looking to get himself a six now, after he compared the damage of his to yours.
Watch, he may show up on the boards soon!

i considered keeping my US bumpers for the same reason, i've already had two very close calls with my 6 since i've had it, and the previous owner wasn't so lucky.
he had an old lady pull out infront of him in grand marquis and he hit her at about 15 mph or so, denting the nose slightly and pushing the bumper off center...which eventually lead to the trim bellow to fall off a few weeks ago.
all considering, it saved the car from significant damage. but regardless, i'm going euro and just can't stand to look at those bumpers - lol

prjktgrmn,
are your bumpers in good shape otherwise? the metal looks to be in good shape up front, and hows the rear doing? If you need to get rid of them, ill take em! I need a new rear bumper, shocks and all, and the fron bumper on your car looks better than mine!

The protection that the diving boards offer is the only thing that appeals to me. Love the euro bumpers and the extra chrome, but I'll leave this safety feature as is.
Have considered the bumper tuck, but then it's a solid mount and the nose does stick out over the bumper I believe.

the bumper overall is in good shape -- the chrome could use a good polish but they are structurally sound. note that my 633 did not come with the front spoiler so that would have to be added later. rear bumper is perfect, with the exception of the rear valance which has two smaller dents in it. I may be just a little OT here but running up to peoples cars and ripping open the door is NOT a good idea these days regardless of the situation...........ever heard of a CCW?? No offense but if it were my car that the door was ripped open regardless of whose fault the accident was you would be looking down the barrel of a 9mm in condition one.........think first and NEVER do that even though the car is your baby and it was his fault...........its JUST a car.......

Agree! These days are a lot different than 20 years ago. Anyone running up to my car in a rage will discuss the issue with Mr. Glock.

you people and your firearms. I carry a shiny hunting knife and perhaps a crowbar. The hunting knife fits nicely in the flip up armrest in the door.
I wont name names, but i wonder how many people on this board carry a hand gun? I know of a few, but like i said, if they want to speak up thats fine, not my business to point out who does.
Im not saying its a bad idea, especially if you are going on a long trip in isolated areas that you are not familiar with. But is it an everyday thing?
Also, so i dont piss people off in other ways. I am not against guns at all, in fact i need to get out and go target shooting cause i never have and ive inherited 2 guns that would be fun to do it. 16GA remington 3 shot auto (with a nifty recoiling barrel feature), and a .22cal Colt single action Peace Maker.

the odds of the person having a handgun and using it in the upscale suburb where i got into the accident is very low...anyhow...we all do stupid things when we are irate. correct? oh well.
its not just a car

I would NEVER play those odds as it only takes 1 time to lose.............many "well to do" people carry a legal handgun for defence against such situations......... you're right, people get in trouble every day over stupid things.........

I agree!!! You would be surprised and in many instances horrified at the people that have and carry firearms. Many bad things can happen even in "upscale suburbs".

BTW, I carry a LEGAL handgun EVERY day, always have, always will...........whether I'm going to the corner store or to an opera performance.........it goes with me EVERYWHERE...........I hope to hell I never have occasion to use it.............also dont forget all the thugs out there with illegal guns just looking for a reason to use it.........

Oooohhh....a little intrigue on this usually even-tempered board.
It is illegal to leave your car in a hostile manner no matter what the cause or whose fault it was. If there was damage to your vehicle that warranted a police report, you may have found yourself in cuffs...Johnny Mustache is just looking for an excuse to use his new taser...after the 50,000 volts has left your system, you may indeed think to yourself "its only a car" and " I soiled my pants."
I guarantee that you would think that way if you had met one of our gun-totting comapadres that frequent this site...everyone really needs to cool their jets...especially over issues such as pride and "stuff"...
In NY the other day an off-duty officer shot another man dead over an arguement re: whose turn it was to merge into a lane...he shot the man dead because the (dead) man pointed his finger at him...here is a perfect example of the situation many of you have discussed in the above thread. One individual legally allowed to carry a gun that lost his temper vs. another man (without a gun) that lost his temper = two families ruined.
Personally I don't carry a gun because I'm young and bullet proof (famous last words of a dead guy).

Has anyone here any idea what exactly is involved with "euro-ing" an e24?

10-30-2007, 07:16 PM
Yes
There have been a lot of conversations on this. Hate to be a smart a$$ but it has all been covered and some very informative post have been made. I typed in "euro bumper conversion" in the search for the M6 & 6 Series section and came up with a lot of threads. You might want to read thru these and then I will be glad to answer any questions you have. I am sure others will be glad to answer as well.

Sometimes it's all in what you do with the situation. Remember my 87 L6 that the young girl broadsided? See pic one. Well aftewr buying new rear end. LSD Axle and trailing arm.$350.getting wheel repaired $90.00 body and paint $1200.00 including front and rear spoilers.plus $100.00 tip and a lot of help from you guys I am back see pic two.It is not perfect but with the extra money I upgraded the rims and tires. stereo, exhaust and bought a very nice black on black e34.and still have 3 grand. I was lucky that the adjuster recognized the value of my car and I certainly understand the anger and frustration but like someone earlier said if someone pulls my door open its on and I am only looking at surviving at any cost. like the saying goes"better judged by twelve than carried by six.http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc129/sbarley1234/PA312984.jphttp://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc129/sbarley1234/P7212933.jpgg
