Hello guys

I recently purchased an M Roadster, which in Europe means S50B32 engine. The car has the standard filter box assembly on it, but a Remus exhaust.

My question is:

I am a big fan of intake sound. I used to have a Honda CRX VTEC (B16 engine) where i had mounted a short ram intake (basically a cone-shaped k&n filter on a 3" aluminium pipe). That thing howled pretty good when you got on it. Is the S50B32 capable of the same type of sound from the intake, and if so, what manufacturers do you recommend? Preferrably i would like something that comes with some sort of heat shield.

P.S.: I am aware that there is no gain to be had, power-wise, just by adding an open filter.

Thanks for the replies!

I know of the carbon air boxes accompanied by conversion to Alpha-N engine management. That's a little more than i want to spend, though.

I have been looking at a product by Simota. It is a copy of a GruppeM intake, i think. Cant post links yet, but if you go on ebay uk and search "carbon intake z3 m" it will pop up.

Any opinions or experience with this product?

Loads of E36coupe.com folks are running the DaveF or GruppeM kit. GruppeM sounds really nice. Can't beat the sound of a Carbon intake though :)

On stock filters myself.... The soundmaffia on the racetracks over here is getting fustrating, I can barely make it on a stock system :(

the simota is used more and more in the UK like a gruppeM copy. a heat sheilded pod filter would do as well. a bit messy to get all the parts, and u can use an 85mm 22.5deg bend so it misses the radiator easily

Looks pretty good, but i really like the idea of not having to fab up the heat shield.

I must say, that i like the GruppeM replica more and more.

How about the whole deal with oiled filters. Do any of you have experience with the oil messing up the MAF?

if you overoil them it can be an issue but i never really have bad running with mine.

I once brought in a motor with a pipercross brand intake filter attached directly to the HFM with a band.

Put that on with a decent and handmade heat shield, and I think you'd get the sound you wanted.... inexpensive too.

OK, thanks a lot for all your help. IŽll have to consider if i want to buy that expensive, but good looking Simota intake or if i will go the diy route. Either way, when i get it done i will post a fly-by video of acceleration.

Who says you dont get power gains from improved airflow and colder air intake temps?

The gains are small but its still a gain.
