View Full Version : A/C Condensor replacement a DIY job?
Didn't find anything worthwile while searching.
I have a spare condensor, I just need to know if I can tackle this myself, and if anyone has a write-up, link or pics to that effect.

You need a shop to evacuate the system.
Then you replace the condensor using new o-rings wherever you break a connection lubricated with a little baby oil.
Then you have the shop recharge and leak test.
I read it's a good idea to replace the dryer unit ($40?) as this is a filter
in the system whenever you service the system.
I haven't done this but this the basics of what I understand. It is against the law to vent freon to the air. Also freon will damage paint so be careful.
I also think it may require some special wrenches to open the hoses on the AC system.
Why are you replacing the AC consdensor?

I assume will assume that R134a has already leaked out if you need to replace the condensor. If that is the case you don't need to do the evacuation and recovery. After you install the new condensor and drier with new o-rings ( I lubricated with some of the oil that was in the lines, don't know if that was bad or not, but it made sense to me), you need to evacuate the system, then refill with R134a. You can buy a pnuematic vacuum pump and set of a/c gauges from Harbor Freight for ~$50 total. Buy the R134a and a can of oil from your favorite source. I bought a kit from WalMart called "complete idiots guide to a/c" or something like it and followed the directions. My a/c worked great all summer without a problem. The best part is that you will now have the gauges and pump for the next time.
Good luck
Mike
The system is empty already, I ran without an A/C all summer.
I have a condensor and spare lines just in case. I guess I'll buy some o-rings from the stealer and go to town with the bumper removal process and all...
