Damn, that looks good. Hmmmn. maybe I just found my next upgrade.:D

Any idea on the costs involved?

How much total would that cost for the wheel and airbag?

just kidding.

Couple of things - one of my very good friends is responsible for doing the custom E36 slip-ring conversion. I hadn't even thought of the possibility of sticking the new M3 wheel in there, but he had the chutzpah to make it work. He will not do another one, so don't even ask :p

The wheel felt astounding at Mt. Tremblant - I managed to get it in there the morning before we hit the track and it made car control a lot more enjoyable at speed. I'm sure it took at least 10-15 seconds off my lap times, too. (for the sarcasm-impaired: that last part was a joke)

Due to price (better part of a grand) and SRS safety considerations, I don't think I'd recommend this conversion to anyone - when you mess around with SRS stuff you're really taking your life into your own hands. That's about all I have to say...

...Doesn't seem like it's worth the trouble... The 3-spoke motorsport steering wheel looks mighty similar...

Not to rag on the conversion or anything! Mad props to anyone who could custom fabricate an adaptor like that!

Hey, each to his own :D You may be right - it's probably not worth the trouble. And yeah - the guy who did up the slip ring kicks all kinds of ass :)

Anyway, if you get a chance, jump in the new M3 and give the wheel a big squeeze like it's a 20-pack of Charmin. You might dig it :p

For a grand, you can also get the AC Schnitzer sport steering wheel made for the E36 M3.. it looks very similar to the E46 steering wheels, has the radio control buttons on the left and right bars (next to the airbag) and also has alluminum lining along the top and bottom of the actual wheel (from 10 oclock to 2 oclock and 5oclock to 7oclock)..

That Schnitzer wheel sounds nice - do you have any pictures?

Anyway, I didn't pay a grand myself. I'm forbidden to tell you where I got the parts from, unfortunately, but I got stoopid-lucky with the E46 wheel... the deal basically fell into my lap. For those of you that know me, you know I can't turn a good deal down. :D
