View Full Version : Balancing/Alignment question...
hey guys, i have been thinking about lowering my car with a set of coilovers... Idk if im really serious about doing it but i have a couple questions before i buy a set of springs. First, where can I get the springs put on and generally how much is the labor cost ( i dont wanna screw up my car by doing it myself) And, i have been told that i need to have the car aligned after the springs are put on? Is this true or do you just put the springs on and thats it? thanks guys.

Yes, you need a re-alignment. Throughout the suspension travel, the camber changes. Just lowering the car without a re-alignment will cause dangerous handling and terrible tire wear. The front springs will require some special tools, but the rears will be easy. Do it yourself, take it to an alignment shop, and count the extra cash in your pocket. You'll save money even with the spring compressor you have to buy for the job.
I've never done it with a Bimmer, but I've done many spring swaps with ease.

Check your local auto-parts store. I know AutoZone will loan you tools (like a spring compressor) for free. You leave a deposit that's equal to the value of the tool, and they give it back when you return the tool.
I just installed C/Os, sways, and an X-brace on my car. I'd definitely say to do it yourself. I bought a spring sompressor for 15$. The only other 'special' tool that you will need is a good breaker bar and 18mm socket (I use 1/2 drive here). A 16mm cone wrench helped too.
I should be getting my car back from the alignment shop today w/a corner balance. :D
