We've been getting an increasing amount of calls regarding this product and the various amazing amounts of anecdotal information available on various forums about interoperability without errors on the 2006-2008 E90 Sedans with halogen headlights. For posterity I'd like to address these issues once and for all so that there is a repository of information available for all future parties interested in this product. Some of it will read like an advertisement - and it must otherwise, how would we be able to sell you the product that you want.:D
Installation
It's required that you be able to remove your headlights from the car. To do so, you must remove the front bumper. To do this, you must remove 2 main screws inside the fender liners (it helps to remove the wheels for maximum elbow room), and then remove the 8+ screws underneath surrounding the plastic underbody tray/trim. Finally, remove the top screws from the surrounding area under the hood that hold the top of the bumper in place. Once all the screws are removed, you'll have to apply some pressure to pull the fender parts of the bumper out.
[advertising alert] it maybe a good time to get our front M3 style bumper at this time as well (http://umnitza.com/3series-tech-polypropylene-bumper-front-p-5821.html)
At this point, it's a bit difficult to find all the screws but a torx bit and some elbow grease and you'll have the headlights removed along with the single plug that holds all the power/ground connections to the headlights.
The new headlights mount in exactly the reverse way unless you requested some additional features like FXR functionality and/or DRL functionality for Orion V2 (we'll get into that on the phone about what you can expect on that in more detail). Basically, we can wire the angel eyes to be part of your parking light system OR just have the wires out for an extended wiring harness that we can provide for install.
Product
We offer many different options for this product.
Let's summarize them simply like this:
1) Orion V2 - simply the brightest, whitest, best performing angel eyes kit on the market. It will never fail, it will never go out, it will be bright for DRL functionality, and it will be built into the lights for you.
2) FXR vs Xenon - Xenons are found in 35W or 50W, we recommend the 35W canbus HID system that in 95% of cases does not cause ANY errors, while we can't give you a 100% with anything in 11 out of the 12 installs we've done here locally the canbus system eliminated any problems with errors. It is a 35W system, but operates with as much as 43W of power. If you opt for the 50W system, you will get more output and quicker bulb start up, however it will not guarantee any error cancellation (see fixes below)
FXR Retrofits are basically improved high quality projectors that accept D2S factor OE bulbs into them for universal fitment and provide you with built in Bixenon functionality that we enable for you during install. The benefit of FXR projectors even though they are very pricey is that you get deeper light penetration on the road, wider beam pattern, sharper cut off, and more full illumination.
3) Xenix - these are just hyperwhite bulbs that are added to the high beams only. They are relatively simplistic halogen bulbs. They do some color matching.
4) Actual Product - the headlights have 3 manufacturers that we can use - we are currently using our latest batch of DEPO headlights, however there are 2 other headlights available for install from different brands that are equally as good. We almost never sell the standard headlights the way they are because they are imperfect right out of the box. So if you find someone that just wants to sell you that headlight with the HID in it, don't do it. The quality of the light output will not necessarily match what you are looking for.
We disassemble each product (because we need to put the Orion V2 into it) and rework the insides to reinforce them. Especially if we are doing the FXR retrofit.
Errors/Fixes
We have heard that some customers receive mixed errors - some of them are not easy to diagnose because they are other vendor's products. So we have to focus on our own product.
There may be errors from only 2 sources, the angel eyes and the HID. If you get an error from a halogen Projector90, you have other issues like your car or your install.
1) Did you already get the Canbus HID or did you opt for another brand of HID? If you have Canbus and you still get an error, see below.
2) Did you get an error with your angel eyes? Are they separately plugged in or are they attached to the turn signals/parking lights?
Let's assume you install it all perfectly, all the pins lined up, nothing is disconnected and all the lights function as they should and you still receive an error.
To fix errors for #1 above, you will need a) a canbus HID system b) HID capacitors c) wiring harness with relay + gold 50W 60hm resistors or d) all of the above. There is one more way that is out of our/your control and that is to visit the dealer to flash your car for xenons. This may cost you from $50-250 to do, but may be worth it to gain some additional peace of mind.
To date, there has never been a single car that we installed that those 3 things above didn't solve for errors. the wiring harness may be disconcerting but when installed properly will give you MANY years of enjoyment with no errors, ever! It's daunting sometimes to install for many, but we do have a wiring guide for it and it's really not that difficult logically speaking.
To fix errors for #2, we recommend reconnecting your angel eyes to another source a) extending the angel eyes to the fog lights b) extending the angel eyes to a switch with wiring harness or c) using a DRL wiring harness for them.
Experience
We have installed over 12 units locally and not each car will behave the same way. So it takes an experienced company that has done the installs to be your product provider of choice. Don't just buy lights from people that resell them, get them from people that actually WORK with them.
Hopefully this brief summary explains what you can expect and makes you more confident in your purchase. As a final note, we've had many installs over the years, and to date, not one time as an error code on the dash re: headlights or lighting been anything more traumatic than a nuisance. It's not going to damage your car or void any warranty if you have an error.
