I stopped by Morristown BMW to pick up a few bottles of coolant, but the parts department was closed by the time I got there. So I asked to see if they had a 6MT 335xi or 335i sport package to test drive. They only had a 335i auto loaner car so I thought it shouldn't be too different.
So far I'm a little disappointed. The car felt heavier then what I'm use to. The gas and brake pedals also felt too soft making it harder for me to modulate. Are the e90's throttle by wire? The salesman said they still use a throttle cable. Acceleration was fine, along with braking, but the car just didn't feel tossable and fun like my e36. Maybe the sport package would make the handling better.
In defense of the 335, my car is a modified e36 328i 5 speed with aftermarket shocks/springs, M3 brakes all around, and a bunch of other stuff. I'm also running a lot of negative camber up front and super sticky summer tires which makes my car amazing with turns.
I'm only 5'7" and 135lbs so I've always felt cozy in smaller cars and the e90 has just gotten huge for a 3er imho. I think my e28 528e is big and roomy :eyecrazy Maybe I should just wait for the 135i or just buy a 1974 2002tii touring like I've always wanted to :D
Perhaps I'll give the e90 another test drive in the future. I might be able to enjoy it more if there isn't a salesman sitting in the passenger seat :devillook

Idiot (the salesman not you). It is drive by wire.

Sport Package is THE must have option. Try one with SP. Also, after putting it in Drive, put the shifter to the left (DS) and try that for a while. You really have to drive it for a while to get used to it.

huge difference goin from an e36 to an e92. u definitly sound like someone who should be behind the wheel of the 135i. and it'll feel just like ur e36 (in size at least)

Should be a huge difference in handling though, stock to stock at least.
first off your comparing apples to oranges!!!!
Your car has aftermarket suspension there is no way the car without sport package is going to compare. Even with sport package IMO it still has body roll.
ya the sport package is nice but even then i threw it off under 100miles and know have Kwv2 and am litterally on a rail!!

I knew the gas pedal felt too soft to be a throttle cable. Maybe the salesman didn't know what drive by wire is? The guy said he use to go to the track when he was younger with the Porsche club.
I'll definitely try to find a 6MT 335i with the sport package. Do the 335xi have a sport package? Do they also get stiffer springs and shocks? The salesman said the xi doesn't get stiffer shocks and springs with the sport package. I was confused about that. Can the m-tech / aero package be ordered with a 335i and xi? I couldn't find it on bmwusa.com, but I've seen it on someone's 335i before.
I was hoping to get a car that I didn't have to mod or mess around with to be happy with. That's what my e28 and e36 is for. Maybe if the 335i doesn't satisfy this, I can always wait for the e90 M3 :alright

Yeah no suspension tweaks for the xi with the SP. And no factory installed aero package offered yet AFAIK, but can be dealer installed or aftermarket. If you can afford the M3, definitely wait and go for it.
u can have your dealer install the mtech kit before u even pick it up. Yes u need to find a 6MT with sports package and fell right at home!!
Heres my e90 335 with mtech kit
