i think e39's too heavy for that engine...
should've keep that 2jz inside the supra
will have better performance

+1 For originality, haven't seen a 2JZ in a 5er. I am a fan of the engine, it's a well built I-6. A friend of mine has a MK IV Supra TT and it is a very strong car.
There is a guy here in MD with a 530i sport like mine, BUT it has a VFE blower. He loves it and even gives M5's a run :)

The 1st and 2nd gen Toyota Aristo (Lexus GS) had a 2JZ-GTE. We never got it here but that is just as big and heavy a car as the E39.

and there are plenty of supra twin turbo swaps into the E36 M3 as well - mostly in thailand i think...

probably because the Supra engine has an aftermarket
Supras weigh 3400-3600 lbs.
It probably moves the e39 along fairly well.

I bet it would move really well, plus its probably one of the top 10 easiest engines to mod ever in terms of response for your dollar.

Interesting swap - would have never thought of it. Those 2jz motors are hard to come by ($$$) but are rock solid. A few years back there was a white Supra in Hempstead, LI making around 1000HP with the stock bottom end.

WOW.... Thats my car... I do have better pics if anyone is interested.
It was originally a 528i (190 hp) it's last dyno run was 344hp (at the wheel). Need to sort out a couple of things before I raise the power up. Going through rear ends like crazy. Subframe is holding up but diff's aren't. I was actually looking to see if anyone has an LSD rear that is holding up to approx 500hp. My plans are to run it between 450 and 500 as I do sometimes treat it like a daily driver.
I did have a Supra in a past life. The BMW with the Supra engine is a blast to drive and no one ever expects it when she opens up.
And yes the entertainment systems is a PC (P4 backbone and linked in Emanage support). Planning to eventually swap out to a standalone but that's going to be much later for now the emanage is doing the job just fine.

Sure, why the heck not we could even call it the "adventurous modifications". Obviously you are one to walk the beaten path. Thankfully not everyone in the word chooses such a path and do things that are off the known path.
For whatever reason it matters I have a Lexus GS430 and it's more your style (plain). I did have a 535 which I recently sold slightly modified (pure BMW) and looking to replace it with a '03 540 which for the most part will remain pure BMW except for maybe a Carputer installation.
If this offends you so look away... I wasn't even the one who started this thread I just happened on to it and realized it was my car so I chimed in.

Its your car, and it is an interesting swap. If you did it for that reason then props, but if you did it because you believe you made a better car then you are wrong.

Definitely a bonehead move...
bear in mind this is the same guy who, because he was an "installer" at Pep Boys (installers do oil changes, wiper blades, and other light maintence such as batteries, tires) thought he was good enough to be a Mechanic. So he took the job there.. and 1 hour simple 1980s GM cars such as Monte Carlos/Buick Regals-- he'd take 5 hrs to change the rear shocks.
And then.. he suddenly knows enough to drop a 350 in a 82 Porsche. Whatever!
I worked with the guy as an installer myself.. granted I did a lot more than just the low-key maintence stuff.. I was into brakes, starters, and usually helped the Master Techs out with the more difficult jobs whenever I could.. just because I had that base understanding in my head.. (not beating my chest, im just trying to protect the reputation of OTHER pep boys employees who very well know what they're doing, regardless of "title"). (it may also have had something to do with the fact that the Pep Boys where I worked was #2 in service in the North East.. so we just had the better employees I suppose)
This guy however... yeah.. there's always 1 in the group.

Only 344rwhp? Those aren't single turbo numbers. That looks like a decent sized single on there. I'm guessing you're running stock fuel system? If so, you'd be running more efficient with the stock twins. A single can be putting out anywhere from 475rwhp-675rwhp on pump gas.
Also what size FMIC do you have on there? It looks kinda small. On my Supra I'm running a Powerhouse GT72 with an HKS fuel rail and 720cc injectors. Obviously other comp, fuel, exhaust, and boost mods. On full boost (2 bar), I'm putting down 762rwhp (would be more if I used 850cc's).
Keep me up to date on the swap. It is a pretty interesting project. And of course I'm a huge Supra fan. Good luck! :)

thanks. Unfortunately its hard to make a site totally based on hopes and dreams, lol, but this winter I should be moving pretty well on the project.
Heat/AC is one part of the project im dreading, but its just more wiring really.
Once I get the engine in and running and the rear diff swapped, Im most likely going to tackle the suspension. Once thats done and everything gets a couple shakedown tests, Im probably going to take everything apart and paint it.
Once its painted, Ill focus on interior wiring and stereo stuff.

I actually do have a T70 on it right now and the fuel system is upgraded with 2 Walbros and custom lines. The 680cc injectors are sitting in the garage too. Have it turned down right now until I get the rear end sorted out. Sad to say even the 3.15 lsd from the M5 hasn't held up for too long. Working on getting the interior back into shape, a/c controller and the Carputer.
Work has been very busy too so haven't had much time in the last couple of months to do anything. May have to take a couple of vacation days to get some work done.

Sweet swap. BMW swaps are always criticized but the way I see it, if it's not a rare or special BMW like say an E30 M3 or 2002 Tii, etc. then what's the big deal? There's plenty of E39's so no issue there. At the end of the day it is your car though so do as you like. German HP isn't cheap so I can understand going Japanese.

Maybe not. You can buy a kit for the conversion.
The 924 had a 98 hp Audi engine. The 924 was a product of the Porsche+Audi+VW corporation. It might make more sens to drop a 944 or 951 engine in there, but those would probably cost more than the car is worth and you'd still have a car with rear drum brakes, no ABS, no airbags, etc. Just my two cents.

TKphoto... you should calm down.
Swapping a LS1 into a mustang is fine too and I'm sure a lot of mustang people would approve of it. I would, the LS1 is a great engine that makes easy power and gets excellent gas mileage. So if I had a 60's mustang that might be one of my first candidates for a motor swap because the newer 4.6 is too wide to fit between the shock towers and the LS1 isn't! Thanks for the idea.
And btw, comparing a mustang engine to a camaro engine is ridiculous because it would be a pointless swap seeing as they are so similar. A supra motor is far superior to a 525,530,540 etc engine. Swapping a supra motor into anything is usually cool.
Before I sold my M3 I was going to put a 2JZ and a 6-speed in it and take the M3 6 out and put it in my 84' supra because I used the 84 as a light track car and drift car and the linear powerband was good for that. And I loved everything about the E46 except for the engine so that's why I only modded the suspension. IMHO the M engines are like motor cycle engines under too much strain and are very unreliable along with the fact that they are already tuned about as high as they should go and are built to be naturally aspirated.
boosting a bmw inline 6 when you could put a 2JZ in would be retarded. You would have to build the hell out of everything and spend about $25-40k on building the motor for boost and ecu tuning before you even get into buying a turbo or fuel system and you would still be screwed because you would kill your transmission along with everything else. If I wanted big power from a 5 series and had the option to put a 2JZ that I could get for $2k in the car and make 475hp for about $1500 extra and then being able to get $600-1000hp for another $5-6k I'd do that any day over messing with building an engine that wasn't made to be boosted and spending countless amounts of money just to keep the bmw engine in.... all that money, extra work, and you end up with a less reliable and less powerful engine? nonsense
iamkhanz
11-17-2007, 05:06 PM
too heavy for that engine people say..lol Supra motors can put out over 1000hp..you think that's not enough power for our "heavy" car lol!!! Props for who ever put the supra motor into their BMW...probably made it more reliable even with twin turbos! Good job!

I have 530i with VFE blower and I am not keeping pace with M5 (it still has 70 more horse at the fly and hella lot more torque). So I don't get flamed on the condition of my 530i: its in excellent shape; SC installed/tuned by VFE.

The IS300 has a 2JZ-GE and the Supra and Aristo (Japanese Lexus GS) have a 2JZ-GTE. The T obviously stands for turbo and the IS300 NA 2JZ is only 220hp.

Sorry folks, I haven't posted anything in these forums in quite some time. Had some family issues to deal with so haven't really been doing anything.
I have been driving the car almost everyday now between Palm Beach and Ft Lauderdale (about 50mile each way) and have had NO problems with her. Very stable I plan on bumping the power up to about 450hp by the end of the month. Need to schedule Dyno time to her retuned. Pretty cool adding 100 extra horses simply by raising boost and retuning. Car already has 3" exhaust and T70 single turbo on it.
VGMogul:
Thanks for the chime in you explained what I wanted to say very very well. I originally thought of boosting my 528's engine but was advised anything above 6lbs of boost had the potential of destroying the motor. Other options would have been to pull the engine tear it down and rebuild it from the bottom up or better yet source a M3 engine and tear that one down and rebuild it...
4500 RPM:
My E34 is now in the hands of someone else it only had minor mods (suspension and stereo) while I owned it. The person who has it now is actually considering putting in the 1JZ-GTE in it and I will probably help with it.
Overall I am very happy with the 2JZ engine in my car it's reliable stable and a heck of a lot of fun to drive around only little petty issues and clean up type things are left right now.
