Wow. That's a badass 7. Decent price, too. Might wanna hit the 7 board ahead of time so you know what to look for in terms of prev. maintenance, etc. E38s have some well-known issues that aren't cheap.

+1!!!
especially the v12 of death in that thing. They're already wiring nightmares as it is.

If you do buy it, drive on up to the Thursday night Bimmer meet every week in Pembroke Pines (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=805988). There may be other 7-series drivers there who can give you some hands-on ownership tips.

if you do buy it your not saving much, all the money which you "saved" becuase this is a good deal will all be spent on repair. a car that has 2 of everything (2 batteires, 2 air mass meters 2 ECU's.....) will make your pocket pretty light

The V12 isn't the scarry part on that car. In terms of maintenance, E38's make our E39's look reliable.
If any of you ever get a chance to drive a BMW V12, you willl be sold. Those things are so smoothe and pushing the gas is like being propelled by a very powerful electric motor. Not the most HP of any motor out there, but that is one of the reasons that they live so long.
Tip for the future: If you find a rare car for a great price and really want to buy it... Dont go to a forum full of people that like that car and post links to it!

Lol... good post.
If I liked how the car drove I'd buy it, but I'd make sure I had at least another 5 gs for it. Looks pretty slick and I bet you'll love it.

My bro had an 89 750iL and loved it. I drove it and had to have a BMW right away. However, after his was stolen, he bought an E39 and was impressed by the difference in power to weight feel. You might want to ask his opinion of the two in comparison. True, his was eight years older, but it could be helpful advice.

Remember...there's a BIG difference between an e38 750iL (M73) and the e32 750iL (M70). It would be like comparing the e39 540i (M62) to the e34 540i (M60).
Granted, all cars have their good and bad...but I'm sure you all understand the difference between the problems of the e34 versus the problems of the e39, right? :)
In fact, the e38 740i/iL shares many of the common maladies of the e39 540i. They share many of the same components like engines, seats, some HVAC systems, cooling systems, and other various electrical components.
If you follow the e38 forums...you'll see a distinct difference in the V12 vs the V8 in terms of cooling system failures, and many engine maladies. The V12 sees less of them. But, again...when the V12 does have issues...it can come in double doses...plus there's not alot of room to manuever in the engine bay! ;)
BTW, the V12 didn't get two batteries until 1999 (I believe) which was when the M73TU engine came along.

Another thing...this car is NOT a regular 750iL. It has the limousine seats, and the MID is missing some buttons...which when considered with the limousine features...it must have another MID that is located in the rear seat's fold down armrest (which they didn't take a picture of)...which allows the rear driver to control the MID, and it can also control moving the front seats!
But I wouldn't want the speedometer/odometer with Kilometers per mile. I hope the mention that this car was made for the Canadian market was noticed.

i actually THINK i remember reading in consumer reports that this year range of 7 series BMW's were one of the top 3 worst cars to buy because of maintenance and reliability..just an FYI

I really would never buy that 12-cylinder behemouth. My grandparents used to buy a new 7 series every 2 years.. They got a 750 once, and even the BMW dealership wouldn't accept it for a trade-in.. Because... They couldn't sell them! Horrible cars IMO. That's when they switched to MB and Lexus.

YUP...and I did consider another 750/740 but after noticing the difference just for insurance, decided the 540i was a better deal all the way around. Gotta watch out for so many problems on the 750iL. :mad I had cooling system probs (changed the radiator three times), suspension issues (changed everything and STILL had the infamous vibration), leaking pan gaskets (upper and lower, which will set you back a good $1400 :cashwalle), rotors burn out FAST (she's HEAVY), bad modules (age related but still expensive), electrical ground issues, ETC. :deadhorse:so unless you do ALL of your own work or have an unlimited budget...IMO PASS on the 750 models just based on my experience. :buttrock
However, I must say that it was still fun to drive and when she was running well, it was truly an awesome experience in luxury. As my first bimmer, it sold me on the whole Ultimate Driving Machine and that is why my Bro and I now own the 540iAs! :alrightbmw

Friend of mine bought a E38 750. He got a great deal & knew the car had been well taken care of. Nothing like that V12. Turbine smooth. I moved away and when I saw him a few years later I asked about the 750. He cursed up a storm about maintenance & told me he traded it for a LS400...

Regarding the Maintenance Costs. While accepting Maintenance Cost absorption as a given, you may want to look at how you are going to use the vehicle and reliability. Being stranded or not having a daily driver at your disposal because of mechanical problems can be rather annoying.

Dick,
Please keep us updated. I am very interested in your opinion of the E38 since I almost bought one prior to purchasing the E39. (Since my house was built in 1920, the garage is tiny. The E38 being too long to fit into it played a large part in why I started looking at E39s  ).
