My transmission locked up on me yesterday. 3800 miles on my 2007 335i 6MT. The car was stuck in first, but my actual stick was wiggling around in neutral. Dealer said they are swapping the whole tranny, approx time around 2 days...Has anyone heard of this or had this happen to them?

That pretty much sucks. Has the dealer stated why that occurred?

All they said was that the tranny locked up and they had to swap it.

BTW, manual trannies are more reliable as there is less that can go wrong. This must be an exception.

Don't complain about 2 days.. I've been without my car for over a week now to fix some computer problem with the wipers not working.. Let me tell you though, I would not want to own an AT out of warranty. This 328 wagon loaner I have, I already think the tranny ain't working right. Doesn't feel like it's accelerating correctly , like it is shifting while I'm accelerating, rev matching downshifts are normal but how long will those work properly for? You just got unlucky with your car... Probably just a fluke.

manufacturing defect, happens. Not sure what a normal percentage of failure is, but it sure is not 0.

It is a pain but it happens. Happened on my 99 328i. In fact, dealer picked it up for service and called me asking if I was having trouble shifting. I said "no, why?" He said "well, it is stuck in first gear." The car had 10k miles on it. I was livid. Was FMW (now Herb Chambers). They gave me a loaner 5 series. They had the car for a month so be glad. First tranny they put in was a rebuild. I had them take it out and get a new one. Thy are a good dealer to work with. Hope the service is as good now that it is under new management as I ordered a 335xi from them last week. Hoping even more that it has no problems.
