Howdy,
My 1994 530i is running around 90K miles. I was wondering if there is a general rule about replacing the ignition coils, assuming that they have never been changed out. Or with this, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I was looking at the bavauto ignition coil pack with their wiring harness, rather than OE/Bremi/Bosch. Secondly, have any of you used their coils before, and if so, have you noticed any difference? Thanks.

the Bavauto ones are good. Ignition packs average over 140,000 miles before they start to go. This is one of the cases where if it aint broke dont fix it especially with your low miles. I think this was mentioned in another thread this week on here.

The first coil pack was replaced at 159k in my car, just the one that was bad.

I had two that failed somewhere over 142000 (besides the Self-Leveling leaks I think its the reason he traded it in). Put 6 BavAuto's in about 2000 miles ago and they rock. I really can't say if they are any better than stock since I purchased the car with idle and acceleration problems.

What are signs that your ignition coils need to be replaced? I've got a 525i with 163k on the clock and I'm getting ready to do plugs and valve cover seals next week... should I replace the coils while I'm in there?

i would only replace once you see signs that they are going bad. signs of going bad would include a rough idle or misfiring.

Thanks for the responses. The car runs fine with those denso iridium spark plugs. I'll leave the coils alone until I put on another 50K miles.

nikaios,
i have a 92 525i manual, and from the symptoms before i replaced one of my coils, my car would "strutter" after shifting from either 1-2, or 2-3...initially, i thought it might be my spark plugs, so i replaced them...but the problem persisted...then i tested each coil and found 1 to be bad...since i replaced that coil over a year ago, my car's been running smooth :) hope this helps :)

Hm, that might sound a little familiar (mine's a manual too)... I'll have to pay attention on the way home from work. How did you test the coils?
I've had a couple cars that I've swapped many coils on.. I's ay if you don't have 150k miles or so on it and your having hesitation from a stop its from the boots being rotted, oil leaking from your valve cover, or plugs..
Some say to swap one, and I've done that, but its only a short matter of time until you have to replace the next one.. By the time you buy 6 you could have saved yourself a ton of time and a decent amount of money by just swapping the set with the Bav Auto ones... Unless you don't plan on having your car long that is..
