Spend a few hours yesterday installing a cd changer and wiring into my e34 touring. I bought a cd43 a few weeks ago and had been on the lookout for a changer to go with it. On saturday I were to a salvage yard and managed to find a smashed e39, with the cd changer AI and wiring intact.
My e34 didn't have pre-installed wiring so I had to run the cable and power.

I stripped the changer wiring from the e39 and then fitted it to my car. Most difficult thing was removing all the bits 'n pieces to get the wiring neatly fitted. All I have to do now is fab up some brackets to hold the changer in the stock truck location.

Upside,
Total cost = €20 (about $30) for the changer and wiring!

Downside,
No sliding door cover on the changer.

:alright

I hear ya on the cheap CD Player!

My friend has an e36 that he put in a new system in and literally CUT the wire to the cd player. I asked him to open his trunk and sure enough as I trace the cable back another foot, there was the screw connection. An hour or two of soldering 15 wires together and I had myself a free cd player (he gave it to me because he had no use for it and it was cut)! My car was prewired though which made it a LOT easier.

Nice one...!

I wish mine was prewired, would have saved me a bunch of time.

Can you check your power lead to the changer? I want to know if the positive wire is hot all the time or switched with the ignition.

Cheers

I think if you can eject the cartridge without the keys in the ignition, it will be hot all the time.
