View Full Version : Stereo not working for MP3 files

i have a 2007 328i (with Premium Package)and was playing around with the stereo today and noticed that it can play MP3 files on a disc. Now I burned a CD with MP3 files and placed it in my system and it read "Error". Is there something I am missing here? The CD I burned was mp3 files and not audio...should the CD player in my car be reading the MP3 files on disc?

Should work, try another CD.

tried 2, still says error. Now I am using a CD-R, and also tried a DVD-R which i know would not work. Frustrated

I have an mp3 disc in my 335's stereo right now--works fine.

Can you verify that your other home equipment can read this/these discs? I mean your main CD player in the house, for example. NOT the machine that burned the discs in the first place.

did you close the disk?

did you close the disk?

Just for those who aren't in the know about CD burning--mryakan meant "close the session" on the CD.

Usually this is done automatically by your burning software--unless you explicitly tell the software that you want to leave the CD session open, allowing you to burn more files to it later.

Make sure you close/finalize the disc.

The CD I burned was mp3 files and not audio

Are you sure they were MP3 and not AAC or DRM music files?

Hello "Sens07":

Do you get the "error" when you first put the CD in or when you try to play a track?

I'd bet $1 that it's a CD not closed or finalized. There are a few CD burner programs that don't give the close/finalize option unless you look for it.

Just off the top of my head. Make sure your files are not protected. I have many Napster MP3s that will not play if I burn them to disk but work just fine on my laptop. How old is your burner, some of the really old ones cannot write at high speed.

Mine will play some files and not others- all converted by the same program from the same CD at the same bit rate (192) and burned on Memorex CDs???

do they still make - and+ CDs?

I'm glad I have a Mac and not the stupid PCs which make things too difficult.

Macs are good. Sometimes you just want something that just plain works. Doesn't need fiddling with (hear that BMW with your sometimes "fiddly" control schemes?).

However, I believe that Mac's cd burners read both + and - media, just like a PC's.

OS-X is based on BSD, so you know it's gotta be good.

As for the CD, I've been digging out some of my really old burned discs (1x and 2x days), both mp3 and normal audio CD, as well as burning quite a few new ones, and I'm impressed with my car's CD player's ability to play a wide range of media types. It's far less picky than the Alpine I had in my last vehicle.

I'd agree that the OP's problem is that the disc is not finalized or is burned in some non standard format.

No such thing as +/- when it comes to CD-R's. That's just a DVD thing.

You gotta love the PC haters....MACs are for folks that don't know better. (how's that for a MAC hater quote?)

But that's for another message board. :-)

Agreed...

Interesting how Apple has over the past several years abandoned their beloved RISC architecture for the Intel chipset, and re-wrote their whole OS on Linux.

Not really a MAC anymore.....just fancy expensive hardware running an inferior pseudo OS on top of Linux.

:lol

Where o where did the OP go...we are all awaiting confirmation that closing the session was indeed the culprit.

My money is on that solution as well.

Well, on BSD UNIX, anyway, which is not really Linux, but in the same family.

It is sad to see the demise of the IBM/Motorola based hardware though. Seems x86 is going to be the dominant platform going forward for the foreseeable future. I hope Sun holds out with their SPARC.

Mine is not playing my MP3 cd's that played in my xterra.

I use Nero to burn and on the final step i choose not to do mulisession, which i believe it closes/finalizes the CD.

Should i be using another burning software and give it a shot?

any help is appreciated.-

It depends on what software your using but it on some software it gives you a message asking wether you want the disc to be used on this computer only and gives you a check box for if your gonna be using this disc in other devices. You choose that your gonna be using it in other devices and you can play it in any player that reads mp3s.

Are you using CD-R, +R, RW? Not sure what BMW supports, if it is all or some, but that may be another thing to check out.

I use Nero to burn data MP3 discs and they work fine in my 335.

I don't do it often though, so the only media I've used is TDK 80min CD-R. They work as expected.

There are no CD+R only CD-R and CD-RW. They only make + format for DVDs.

thanks for the correction, I guess I was thinking CR-ROM for the 3rd format, but said +R, but I anyway I don't think that you can burn CD-ROMs.

Meh :) yes it is.

It will also play WMV, and whatever you put on it. burn it correctly and it will play.
