Zenon HID Headlight works intermittently

Intermittently my HID, Bilevel Xenon headlight does not work and I get the attached warning light. Then the next day or hour, the light works. It only comes on after the car has been turned off and then turned on. The headlight unit is getting power because the angel eyes remain on. Sometimes the adaptive lighting system works and sometimes it doesn't. Must be a software issue. Ughhhh!!!!!!!!

My 2000 E46 had no issues. I guess I should have waited for a 2008 E92 so BMW could have worked out the gremlins and kinks!!

If it is software then you'd get patched and be ok, unless no fix exists yet in which case 2008s are no better. Software issues IMO are not differentiators between different MYs unless the underlying problem is a hardware one.

After being in the shop for 2 full days, my car is back. After changing the bulb, igniter, the controller and the footwell computer, they figured out the problem was a damaged wiring harness. One of the pins was pulled back so it could not make a robust connection. The cause of this is 2 possibilities:

1. A factory manufacturing defect or;
2. When I was in an accident they replaced the headlight unit and the autobody technician may have pulled on the wiring harness instead of the connector plug, to disconnect the light assembly from the car.

Well at least my car now has the latest firmware.
