BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer has revealed a few of BMW's plans for th next ten plus years. The automaker has set a five year goal of selling 1.8 million vehicles per year by 2012 and 2 million vehicles by 2020.
In order to reach this goal BMW plans on increasing production at its Spartanburg plant in the US and its MINI plant in the UK. Of course increasing production will not be able to increase sales on its own, so BMW plans on introducing new models and a possible fourth brand. Currently BMW consists of Rolls Royce, BMW and MINI. Talk of a fourth brand would help the automaker reach its goals. BMW is planning on releasing an X1 crossover, a vehicle based on the CS concept that was revealed earlier this year and a new Progressive Activity Sedan (PAS). Also the new BMW 1-Series and upcoming X6 crossover will also help increase sales. In regards to MINI, the automaker is already set to release the new MINI Clubman in the US next year and is also working on a new MINI SUV.
Here is the speech from Dr. Norbert Reithofer Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG Press Conference on the Strategic Realignment of the BMW Group: The Torque Report (http://www.thetorquereport.com/2007/09/bmw_wants_to_sell_2_million_ve.html)
I like how Dr. Norbert Reithofer said "The BMW Group is at the beginning of a new era" at the closing of his speech.
