I recently found a small tear in my headliner on my e93 (May 07 build date). The tear in the headliner is right above the driver's seat (above where your shoulder is) where the first roof panel meets the second panel. It appears that the string which allows the soft part of the headliner to fold properly got wrapped around so when the roof was closed it stretched the headliner and put a small tear in it.
Took it in yesterday and I was told that the whole headliner needs to be replaced. Just wanted to give all e93 owners a heads-up just in case this happens to yours.

That's what I was going to say. If the roof malfunctioned and caused the tear, it should be covered under warranty 100%. If the OP finds that his dealer wants to charge anything, a case should be elevated to BMWUSA for sure.

My dealer has been great and they are taking care of it free of charge (normal wear and tear does not apply as my car is only 4 months old) plus the fact that they saw the string wrapped around which caused the headliner to stretch and tear. Also will be getting a free loaner when I bring it in on October 2.

Good deal. I would have been floored had they tried to bill you for this. This is as it should be!
