View Full Version : 335i twin turbo engine blew up

I brought my 2007 335i in July 2007. I know that new car must break in the first 3000 to 5000 miles. So I was very carefully driving the car under 3000RPM for the first 3000 miles, then sometimes go 3500RPM during 3000 to 5000 mile. Alright, now my car just reach 5100 mile. But last night, i was going to test the car at it’s 5000RPM and see how strong is the twin turbo (5000RPM only has output of 240HP, 6000RPM has out put of 300HP). After a few times that I reach 5000RPM, the next thing I know is my engine blew up… how I know that? The car was shaking a lot when I accelerate. Then I put to neutral gear, the RPM drop from 4000 to 0, then the engine shuts off (on the highway while I was driving 80mph). then I put back to 6th gear and pop the clutch, the engine turn back on. It says “engine malfunction, reduce power” on my iDrive. Then I get off the highway and park the car. There’s huge blue smoke came out of the muffler, and I smell the burning engine oil smell…. The idling was not stable at all. It jump around from 400rpm to 1300rpm. then I call the tow truck to tow it to BMW center. I know this is the first generation turbo car that BMW has, I expected some little defects might happen, but I didn’t expect the huge defect like this.

Wow! This is the 1st serious problem like this that I heard of. That's pretty serious. Did the dealer mention anything? Also did you have any mods on it or did you rev it to/past the redline?

wow, and after you were so cautious during the break-in. i think you'll be getting a new engine out of this deal. :eyecrazy

I never mis-shift or redline the car. never modify anything in the car. everything is factory. the car is now in BMW service center (just went in this morning). i think they will rebuild the engine or put a new engine in it.

Do they have any idea what might went wrong (DME logs, etc) or is it just a bad sample.
P.S. Cannot lemon the car yet, unless you have the same engine trouble couple more times or the car stays in the shop for an extended amount of time (month or so I believe).

Terry (and other tuners) is probably just thankful it didn't happen to a car with his JB installed. That would have been one unfortunate coincidence :shifty.

Heard the same thing happened to one of the new Ferrari's - you'd think they'd get things right for that kind of money (sw). Sadly, stuff like this happens to all cars, you just were unfortunate enough to have it happen to you. Gl with the repairs.

It happens often in F1 and there is a lot more riding on that than a pissed off customer. Granted those engines are stressed much more, nonetheless they are built with higher tolerances and with the intention to last the whole race, but as you said Shit happens, and it sucks when it happens to you. My sympathies to the OP.

I'm apparently the only one who is skeptical that someone named "Vtecmax" would come on here complaining about a BMW engine destroying itself.
Frankly, I don't believe a word of the story. Pictures or it didn't happen...

+1. Plus not exceeding 3,000 rpm for 3,000 miles sounds like BS. Isn't the recommended break in something like not over 4,500 rpm for the first 1,000 miles?

and since when was the breakin 3000-500 0 miles? It is usually 1200 miles!

Wow, only takes 13 posts on this topic for everyone to pile on. Nice.
I'll admit that a relatively new engine like this "blowing up" like OP claimed is rare, in fact almost unheard of (even the Ferrari engine blowing up was under testing conditions) without some user error involved. I don't mind calling a troll for what it is, but let's at least wait until he/she can't provide the required evidence before everyone pile on, shall we?
I mean, how did the first few guys with exploding S54 engines feel when their engines started blowing up, and the first thing out of your mouth is "troll" for even assuming that a company like BMW can ever produce an engine that COULD blow up?
Next thing you guys will be claiming this guy works for Infiniti.

hopefully my 328 is safe.

I made it a grand total of 30 or so miles before I did a couple of 6500 RPM runs.
Since then, I've been good after I got it out o' my system.

Mine was left in a sleeper mode "accidentally" at delivery. The couple of time I could have approached redline, I cut me off at 4500 RPM. That was a nice unintended feature, which I got quickly removed at 2000km.

wow...I only made it to 1490 before I stomped on my gas and let her rip. I figured the last 10 miles wouldn't make a difference...and I couldn't wait.
I call BS on someone waiting 3-5k miles. No one would double the recommended break-in time "just to be sure." If you're that stupid, you deserve to have the engine blow up on you.
On a separate note...my stomping on it usually takes me to about 5-6000 RPMS. Is it bad to do this too often? I try to limit how many times I do it but sometimes I just can't help myself. It's too damn fun...

I believe unless it overheats, you are not doing much worse to it. On the long run it may make it wear faster, but we are probably talking beyond what you keep it for. I always believed you can rough your car up if you make up for it and treat her for all the required maintenance on time and when needed. These cars are built to be pushed and they love being revved.

Danny 335i

Every new car i have ever owned i gave a hard break in. Never had an engine related problem, or burned any oil.For the first 500 miles on my 335i coupe i pretty much did it by the book. After 500 miles i started to rev it out to 6 grand without any hard launches. After i would get moving i would rev it going through the first 3 gears.I also slowed the car down without much use of the breaks in the lower gears not going over 5 grand. This seals the rings faster. At 1k miles i started to go just under redline,(around 6800), but still without any really hard launches.BTW i have 1250 miles on the car. Its bone stock except for the JB1,and i plan on keeping it that way.I just started redlining it a couple days ago and i love the music this baby makes. At anything over 6k rpm,s it sounds like a quiet F1 race car your hearing off in the distance. The oil level hasnt moved at all, and i am sure this car is not going to be an oil burner.Like i said every new car i break in this way has never let me down.I remember when i bought a new 92 sentra se-r, i asked the service manager about the break in.He told me take it easy for 100 (one hundred) miles then drive it like you stold it for the life of the car.I did just that, and the car never burned oil or ever had a problem in 170k miles when i sold it to a friend.

09-26-2007, 10:12 PM
Yeah, this is an interesting one. If you own a 335i or xi, you might have read the owner's manual on the first day. It says that the break-in period is 1200 miles and to try to keep it under 4200 or 4500 RPM's and then increase more after that, while always trying to vary the speed (under 100 mph) and RPM's during that period. Mine is just over 1300 miles now and I've got it to 6k a few times. No over heating problems (not even close) or anything, and mine is a manual also. BMW Assist would have contacted the driver (maybe) or you could call for your free road-side assistance with the BMW warrantee. Plus, it's pretty much impossible to keep your RPM's under 3k for 3000 miles or more, especially when the red line is at 7k. Nobody's that disciplined, I don't care what you say. :)
If the story is true... I still can't believe it.

Yikes! I once had a VW GTI with the 1.8T motor. The car had 11,000 mi. on it. I had it in for some service and the mechanic revved it up on a test drive and blew out the turbo. Dark smoke was coming out of the exhaust. The car drove, but no turbo. Of course, VW replaced at n/c. I wonder if this occurred with your car. Let us know!
