So when did BMW go from the super cool backwards opening hood to a blah regular style hood? I've always loved the reverse opening hood, I think it looks awesome. I just get confused because I figured somewhere in the late 80's they went to the regular style hood, but I've got a friend with an 84-85 5 series and his opens like a regular hood. I've seen some 89 325's that have thet reverse opening hood. Yet I've seen 90 325's with the regular opening hood.

Color me confused. :conf

Yes you're confused. All 1990 325i cars were of the e30 variety save for perhaps a prototype somewhere in krautland. All e30s came with the flip forward hood.

You can convert the E30 to a "regular" hood - I've only seen it on race cars (saves a fair bit of weight):

Probably a conversion. Working on the front part of the car (like radiator area, lights) it definitely gets in the way but otherwise no.

All the E28s and E34s have the reverse hood. That would be for all E30s.

+1 Pete is right

e28 hoods open like the newer BMW's and e34 hoods open like e30's.

E12, E21, E30, E32, E34 = opens "backwards". All others open normally.

I think the term is "clamshell" if memory serves me right. I really like it, makes it alot easier to work on. you don't have to climb on the radiator support to reach to the back. Plus when I pop my hood, people always walk to the front and can't figure out why it wont open! :stickoutt
