View Full Version : Noisy Tires - ContiExtremeContact

I have about 20,000 miles on a set of ContiExtremeContact tires that I bought from TireRack on my 2002 530i and the road noise has become unbearable!

At any speed, even 20mph, it sounds like a thousand bees are buzzing around my car. At highway speeds, it drives me insane.

It started a few thousand miles ago and I was hoping it would go away but hasn't.

The tires are inflated correctly, and are rotated. I drive the car daily, just for the work commute. I mostly drive like a grandma, and it looks like there's plenty of tread left on them.

Any suggestions on what I can do? Is this covered under any warranty? Or, has anyone ever been successful in getting tires replaced by the mfr for this kind of thing?

Last, I thought it was interesting that these are one of the highest rated tires on TireRack for my size, 225/55R16, and that most people thought they were particularly "quiet" tires. Ha!

Thanks for any help.

Are you aligned properly and all that? Excessive camber?

it would take A LOT of camber or toe to make those sounds. I don't dout it. I had contis on my old colorado with sport wheels, they rode rough and were noisy above 30. I could'nt stand them!! Good luck!

Brief update: I asked Continental if this is covered under warranty and they sent me to my local NTB for a diagnosis, even though I bought the tires from TireRack.

I didn't feel like waiting 2 hrs for a diagnosis from them today, so decided to move on.

What's the deal with toe and camber? My car feels like it drives fine -- tracks straight, handles well.

With 85k miles, do 530's really need alignments?

Also, is there a real reason I shouldn't go back to the OEM Conti's versus the Extreme Contacts? (Even though this month's issue of Consumer Reports recommends the Extreme Contacts as a Best Buy)

Thanks!
