James,
Haven't seen you around on "roadfly" in a long time. I just joined this board. Looks like you are putting in a 3.6 or is that a 3.8 Euro engine?
I am in the process of setting my car up to run in A Modified ext season. Just put in a full GC suspension and a few other tweaks. Next up is to have the engine punched out to 3.6 in hopes of getting about 320 hp.
You can see my E28 at http://neverlift.homestead.com/flatout.html
Keep me posted on the engine that ought be a real screamer!

Hi John,
It's a 3.8L. The telltale sign is the 4-bolt crank harmonic balancer hub versus the single 36mm nut. That and the valve cover hides the individual coils.
You should *sell* your built 3.5L and buy a Euro 3.8L. I got mine from James Clay at bimmerworld, and he got it from a good supplier in Germany. The engine is just about 100% complete from what I can tell--mounts, wiring, sensors, clutch, bolts, etc are all there. It's pretty clean, too. I have the S30B30 engine sitting at the bimmerworld shop, still, and they say it's in similar shape.
You will have to do quite a bit to contend with Mike Yaskin and his A-mod M5. He's got a built E34 M5 engine (don't know whether it's 3.6, 3.8, or what) with about 430HP, 255/275 tires, 6-pot AP/Lockheed calipers, and more. Chuck Stickley in his B-mod E36 M3 is another force to be reckoned with, too. The two of those guys shot past everyone in their way leaving 10 and running down the front straight at Summit last time I saw them. It was unbelievable the kind of power they had!
The 3.6L engine is going to cost you more than $8k to punch out to a 3.6 or 3.8L. The S38B38 has bigger valves, bigger throttles, better engine management, bigger ports, and a whole host of things that will shame a built 3.5/3.6L, especially one of our vintage. Expect to pay around $8k for the engine complete. Sell your built S38 for $5k or so to. There are a lot of E3s, E12s, and E24/E28 owners that would snatch one up.

James,
Thanks for all the info. My engine currently makes close to 300 hp with 282/272 cam set up, exhaust, and chip. The cam setup is worth 30 hp alone. I have access to some slightly used 3.6 stuff (crank and pistons) taken out of another friends M motor that he is turbocharging and enlarging to 3.8. I hope the crank and pistons add another 20 hp along with a Electromotive Tech3 engine management system.
I make no bones about challenging Chuck or Mike or being competitive in A modified. I just want to have some fun with the car. I am actually not that far off Mike and Chuck's pace at Summit Point. They both run 1:22's and I run 1:27's with 130 hp less than Mike. I am hoping that with the rebuilt engine I can get into the 1:25's.
Summit Point is all about handling not horsepower. My Challenge car is down about 50 hp on Mike's car but I can easily pull 1:19's all day long.
I hope to do my engine for less than 5K. I may at some point get a 3.8 but at this stage 320-330 hp is plenty. If I need more speed I can always take the 355 C out.
FYI: talked with Mike last fall and found out he is running a 3.8 out of the old EXXON supercar M5's that won the 94 and 95 Championships. Mike was Ed Arnold's crew chief and just swapped the engine into his M5. He runs 9 inch rubber in the front, 10 in the rear and has a custom rear sub frame installed.
Regards.
Jon
PS: Notice we are both in Reston. Let me know when you "monster" is done would love to see it.
