My car only came with one master key (that doesn't unlock the trunk), I'm going to be near a stealership in another week and would like to get an extra key. How much should I expect to pay, and does it have to be programmed or something to drive the price up? The car is a 98 328is.

If you have a master key that does not unlock the trunk, why do you think a new one would. Also, the new key will not start the car unless it is programmed to match the driveway protection system.

I would like to know why the "one" master key doesn't work.

i was just at the stealer picking up a spare key, just the plain one like you have that wont open the trunk and such was 45+tax

for the full out key with the light and all was 65.

so expect to pay about 65 or so the the real master key.

he does not have the master key, he has the valet key, which opens the door and starts the car, nothing more. cant open the trunk or unlock the glove box

when you go to the stealer and order a MASTER key, it comes with the chip built in and the light and will start your car as it is already set and programmed for your car.

The key I have looks like the master shown in the manual and has the LED light built in and does open the glove box, I'm wondering if the trunk lock was changed. It really doesn't matter about the trunk because with the remote on the fob I can unlock the doors and trunk. I'd just like to have a spare because things do get 'lost' sometimes.

its possible then that your trunk lock is broke or something

If you just need a key to get in if you lock yours in, just get the valet then, thats all i did

damn it cost me $65 for the simple key w/out the light & all!!!
i've been buying things w/ the dealership in pa 800-220-2121 (i forget their name). their prices are pretty good & their service is good also. so you can call & see if you can buy one over the phone. the only thing you'll prob have to do is fax them a copy of the registration & driver's license. that's what i had to provide to my local stealership for a new key.
looking back, if i knew that was all was needed, i would have tried calling the pa dealership instead of going to the local stealership. i thought the stealership actually programs the key to my car w/ some electronic gizmo...but no, bmw does all the programming & sends it to the stealership & they hand you the key w/ a smile knowing they just made some easy money off of you.
