My friend has a Mini S and he just put 9000 miles on it. Today he went to the dealer for his first oil change, they told him he has 2000 more miles before his fist change. When he told me this I was shocked. I never heard of such thing and he is kind of conserned also. Can any of you guys confirm this.

He also has the 4 years free oil change option.

The dealer will only service the car (within free maintenance guidelines) when the service interval light says to do so. He can always change the oil, but it'll cost him. It's probably not a good thing to reset the service light as you'll never get the free maintenance.

The dealer is just being stingy. I changed my oil at 2k and I'm going to do it again at 6k (within the next few weeks). It only costs about 35 bucks for the filter and oil, and about a half hour to change it all out. Its a very worthwhile investment IMO.

Here's a link to a DIY guide to changing the oil. http://www.tech-esq.com/mini/minioilchange.htm
