View Full Version : HPF750 "SMG" Turbo M3 Hits the Road!!!

I just got the pleasure of riding around in an HPF750 turbo equipped "SMG" E46 M3, and I must say that was a real treat! The driveability is amazing from the soft "SMG" shift intensities all the way to the race mode setting. On race fuel at the highest shift intensity the car pins you in the seat with no time to breathe between shifts. :) This car is definitely a force to be reckoned with.
Unfortunately, since it isn't ours, we have to give it back to the customer, but I'm sure we'll be seeing and hearing more from Alvin in the upcoming months.
Here's a video of Alvin's M3 I put together.

Here are the dyno results for his "SMG" E46 M3. Alvin had previously purchased the Dinan package which include new ITB's, intake, exhaust and software. The intake and software were replaced with our HPF750 kit.

I love the interior on this car. The gauges fit perfectly behind the paddle shifters.

Looking good. :)
hahaha "sprinkling a little bit... should we go anyways? ah what the heck"
"it's really, really slick out"...
Not to be a party pooper, but I wouldn't be a fan of having one of my cars driven out there in those conditions.

Awesome car!!!
Question: from about 2500-3800.... why does the race gas tune make less boost and power than the pump gas tune?

It's making less boost.

I'll be very interested to see how the SMG II unit copes over a period of time.

It is so clean and bolt-on friendly. I love it. You guys can install these kits pretty quickly. Can't wait until there are 20 of them out there with different type of youtube vids to drool over.

Huh, So Chris... 2 questions:
The larger Dinan ITB's bolted right up to your intake but didn't really provide any increase in Torque or HP over simliarly equipped HPF cars? (or stock for that matter it seems)
The max boost on 92oct is 5.6lbs? What issues did you guys run into into by running 7-11lbs boost on 92-93 w/ Cats? Did you feel it wasn't safe? I only ask because the some of the stage 2-3 CF Chargers are running a pretty consistant 7-9lbs.

They run 7-9 psi at redline, and redline only. This sees full boost much earlier and for a longer duration of time.

Exactly. A high compression engine can always run more boost with a centrifugal supercharger than a turbocharger on pump fuel because the turbo will produce much more heat throughout the rpm band which will result in pre-ignition if the boost is not tailored along with the tune. Area under the curve my friend...area under the curve.

What did you guys do about the self-adjusting clutch? Does it require re-adjustment for the SMG unit every so often?

Is the amount of torque made with pump fuel/boost due to the limitations of the SMG tranny? I was kind of surprised that the torque would be so low.

Yeah, no offense but those are some of the weakest NA S54 numbers I've seen, especially considering the mods.

I kind of agree with Nick here though Cameron, as much as I would love for him to come out with a kit just like you. (:buttrock)
My bone stock 97 M3 made 213 ft-lbs.. why is this vastly superior S54 only making 188 ft-lbs? Isn't that like modded 325 / 328 range?
The turbo plots look good, although it does seem a bit laggy, I guess that is the trade off for 600hp.

My buddy dyno'd his E46 M3 and I don't remember the torque, but only made around 250 rwhp on a dyno dynamics....

Uhh... it's OBVIOUS! This thing wasn't on a dyno with a 75mph wind-tunnel as Steve Dinan says it should be when dyno'd. Dinan parts + 75mph = mucho hp, however Dinan parts + 0mph = negative mucho hp. I'd blame Dinan, but it's so much easier blaming Canada. :lol

I never realize that the temp lights came on the tach when you bounced it off the rev limiter like that.....the SMG may have been shifting fast....but the driver wasn't!
If you're considering this 'marketing material'...you may want to polish it up a bit more as I'm not entirely sure I would feel comfortable dropping my car off at you shop after seeing that video. At a minimum I would ensure that your insurance was up to date and you signed a liability acceptance for any 'test drives'...

You have you have a bunch of horsepower, its pretty easy to bump the limiter.
I agree with the 'marketing material' bit though. It is a shame that they couldn't do a proper, safer test on a dry day with video editing out the pointless stuff.

In order to ensure each and every kit operates flawlessly with varying weather, temperatures, humidity and road conditions, we simulate as many conditions as possible on the street and on the dyno. To eliminate a test condition that included wet pavement for an "SMG" M3 that shifts by itself is not something I'm willing to do.
When each car leaves our shop as seen in the videos, it is flawless in every way. Before each customer gets their M3, our tuner drives each and every completed M3 for 3 days. The entire route is datalogged, and several times a day the datalog is analyzed and minor modifications made if necessary. After every day the car is put on a lift and every component of our kit is checked. On the final day, every part is re-torqued to specs and I take a final drive in the vehicle to ensure it meets my expectations. When I give it the final approval, the car is shipped to the customer, or the customer makes arrangements to pick up their car.
This is how it is. We have yet to receive a special request from a customer that requests to skip this extra insurance.
188ft-lbs of torque from an N/A S54 huh?
Things that make you go hmmmm............
Yes, the "SMG" M3 (as we received it) was slightly down on power as compared to other M3's we've received. I can only speculate, but quite possibly some of the mods that were done to it before we got it didn't result in an improvement in performance.
Is the amount of torque made with pump fuel/boost due to the limitations of the SMG tranny? I was kind of surprised that the torque would be so low.
The pump fuel limitation is solely due to high-compression and low octane. Any more boost with 92 octane fuel would damage the motor. That goes for any method of forced induction chosen on the stock S54 engine without water/methanol injection.
What did you guys do about the self-adjusting clutch? Does it require re-adjustment for the SMG unit every so often?
The clutch is no longer a self adjusting clutch with our kit. It also does not require re-adjustment for the SMG. It actually drives near perfect once installed, but the GT1 or equivalent should be used once installed and the auto-setup run to adjust the shifting.
Looks like a damn clean install. I gotta give it to you guys, nice job.
Thanks.
Things like this makes me work, I need to save money for my kit. So did you have to bring the car there? Any chance of dong this kit in NYC? ICS maybe?
We will have installation shops around the world for these kits popping up over the next few months. We have been installing every kit here in Portland, OR so far to ensure every kit performs as designed. But yes, there will be an installation facility for our kits in the NorthEast.
If anyone has any questions, feel free to email david@horsepowerfreaks.com, and he'll be more than happy to answer them.
Take care,
Chirs.
