Researching a standalone for my m30 (I am maxing out the Split second FTC and 4" MAF)and I want to solicit opinions from the board. I need a full system that I can tune on the street (possibly without dyno) and doesn't require a degree in rocketry to install/use/or upgrade. Opinions...anyone I know folks on the board use a few of these...any regrets or woulda shouldas? Price of course is a deciding factor as is simplicity and completeness of system. ENgine is: m30 custom turbo maxing out at 24 psi (20psi safely). looking for more boost/much more effeciency and will be replacing head (VAC stg 3) and bottom end (topend performance rods and pistons)for about another $7K in Feb 2008. Thanks in advance for all your help.

Megasquirt. You'll want an upgraded MAP sensor, and I have no idea what type of ignition you'll want. If you run the stock distributor, you'll be fine with a basic setup frankly.
Are you sure you want to buy a VAC head vs getting a head built for you? I have no idea really, I just know I can get all the parts+machining for around $2k for a M50 head..

I can get the head parts for about$2800 including dual springs, titanium retainers,275 cam, billet rockers, rocker locks, oversize valves or I can get it from VAC all done for around $3100 with porting and polishing. There is one guy in the BF classified section selling a built m30 head that sounds like what I want but I cannot get ahold of him.
As far as engine management, I want direct fire ignition
and full control of everything with a 3 bar map sensor. I want to be able to exceed 30 psi.

DTA
Can I just call them up and they will put together everything I will need in a package. On the DTA website BMW is not even mentioned but I know you use it so they must have worked with you to some extent. Right? What is your opinion of Tec3/MS/and Haltech? I am not soliciting any bashing or anything just looking for objective opinions. Thanks again for your inputs.

I could have had it at $1650 out the door for a full kit.

Call someone and you will then see that the price is under 3k.
Call a dealer...

Tec3, plenty have given rave reviews, on top of the greatest customer service from Vic Sias! Under $3,000.00 no, but great investment to say the least!

FWIW just got a reply e-mail:
Hello Jon,
The SM4 kit will set you back $2200 and comes with the ECU with on-board 4.4 bar absolute MAP sensor, extra long unterminated wiring harness, intake air temp sensor, water temp sensor, programming/datalogging cable, instruction manual. The software can be downloaded free from Autronic.com at any time. If you have any questions on setup or features let me know. I keep the SM4 in stock also.

Not to sound like an a$$...but...
I don't even think dealer cost is that cheap for a SM4...post your specifics...or PM me directly
Mike
Oh, and to OP...if you have the cash and want a High End ECU without a High end price:

That's about how much I paid for mine. I like VEMS, the hardware feels very professional. On board wideband controller, can do full sequential ignition and injection out of the box.

Yep, I was looking at purchasing a VEMS unit also. AFAIR when I priced it out it was around $900 without shipping.
