NOTE: I'M SORRY, BUT DUE TO LOGISTIC ISSUES I WILL NOT BE GOING AHEAD WITH THIS GROUP BUY. :(

I had hoped and suggested that since harborfreight.com is set up to accept coupon codes, one would be issued for this group purchase. Doing so would allow each of you place an order and have it shipped directly to you. However the latest response I received from Harbor Freight suggested that all units would have to be part of a single order and shipped to a single location. I spoke with the head of customer service today and that requirement was confirmed.

If I had all the units shipped to me, I would then have to ship each out to you and add that cost to the GB price. The resulting group purchase price would likely not be worth the effort. Also, if anything was wrong with your jack, you may have problems exchanging it since you were not actually the purchaser.

Again I'm sorry, but I will not be going ahead with this group buy.

original message:

Would anyone be interested in a group buy on the U.S. General 3000 lb Capacity Lightweight Aluminum Race Jack sold by Harbor Freight?

<http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/taf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=47246>

I don't know what price we're talking about yet. The jack is currently on sale for ~$180 including shipping (plus something like $8 for handling). So it would have to be lower then that price.

Harbor Freight has requested a "sample order", which I'm guessing is an idea of how may units we might be talking about, before they can decide on a discount price.

So at this time I'm just looking to see who might be interested in this GB.

Thanks

Any idea if this will work under a lowered car? Most jacks aren't useable under the front end of my car (M3 with H&R coilovers).

The minimum saddle height is 3 1/2", but the body of the jack is a bit taller. You might check out this thread.

Damn, that's about half the saddle height of my jack from Sears. Plus, it's a heck of a lot lighter at 37.4 pounds.

But, it looks like the height of the body is about the same, as is the overall length, so the handle will still be unable to move up and down at all once the jack is under the car. Oh well :(

Check out AC Hydraulic DK13HLQ jack.

It's long and low. Pretty pricey however, but...

That looks like it'd probably work. I think I've seen a lightweight aluminum one like that somewhere, but again, it was quite pricey, too.

Thanks for the pointer!

Be careful with this jack. There have been several that have broken or snapped at the race track last year - make sure you use a jack stand if you are working under the car. May best friend has one and as of now has not had a problem, but has only used it a few times (his race track only jack as he calls it)

Actually, you should always have jackstands or ramps or something like that. When it comes to a thousand or two pounds being suspended above your rather crushable head/chest/etc., backup support is a good thing, in case your primary support fails.

And I think most jacks state in the legal disclaimer that they should never be used as a primary means of support, anyway.

Anyone know where these things are made? These new versions of the jacks look very tempting but when I hear "Harbor Freight" I think "lowest quality Chinese-made products."

harbor freight is local to me I have some of their products, its by no means a snap-on persay but it will get the job done, how long it will last is a whole new chapter. Let me know on the pricing on these bad boys, we have looked at them before in the 600 dollar range

Well, considering Harbor Freight is currently selling the jack for $180, you may have been looking at a different jack. Harbor Freight compares these jacks to ones sold for $600. I've hurd suggestions that these are the same jacks sold by Griots Garage. I will make no such statement. There are discussions on this board and others about the jack. Some good, some not as good. Learn what you can, and if you decide you might like one let me know.

Definitely interested, if we get it done right now.

I still want to know, though, if these things are machined now instead of cast.

Well for what it's worth, I believe the website does have free shipping. I think you pay around $8 handling, but you might not have to pay tax.

Ummmm, I just got an ad in the mail from Harbor Freight.
These jacks are currently $169.00.

Humm. Is that a flyer from the store?. I got the Harbor Freight catalog yesterday -- guess I'm on their list now -- and the price is $199.99 (although it says "Order now and you get free shipping wth $5 off).

The price is now cheaper still. I just ordered a blue one, for a $10 premium over the plain aluminum: $159 instead of $149. This might be the new, standard discounted price, like $179 was for a long time, or it might be a time limited sale. Either way, seems like a reasonable price.

Besides the pretty blue color, I chose the blue one because the picture on the web site shows the colored models being the updated version, and the plain models being the old style with cast side plates (vs. 'machined billet.') Probably doesn't make any difference, but at least I could justify to myself getting the cooler, colored one.

I just checked out the prices too. They seem pretty good. Interesting the red one goes for more dough then the other colored ones. I wish they all had the silver [pump] handles though.

Boris, I guess you haven't read much of this thread. I was looking for interest in a group buy on these jacks, and there seemed to be a bit. However I couldn't convince Harbor Freight to allow participants to make their orders individually, so all orders would have to have gone through me and all items would be shipped to me. I would then have to ship the jacks out to everyone else. With the price of shipping 35lb jacks, there just wouldn't be enough savings to make the group buy worth the effort. So this GB was canceled a while back. Sorry.
