View Full Version : Pretty convinced that this is the best section of the forum..

I've been around for a long while and having migrated to the FI board almost exclusively has made it painfully obvious that this section is by far the best in comparison to others on BF.C
Jims 335 thread got towed away to the E9x forum and not to bring up the debates (and multiple takes on the topic are valid), but people over there are just way, way different than over here. People are pointing fingers and calling one another spoiled rich kids, a guy Beer Goggles, not knowing me from Adam, is out of the blue harassing myself and others over thing he doesn't understand. I mean, I don't even care about people taunting me about my car or what not, but the common level of harassment from some of those people are "yeah nice house.." !? Are you kidding me?! This isn't CondoForums.com - I don't have anything to worry about in terms of housing haha, but seriously, why should that even matter? My friends I know have the coolest cars and don't have mega mansions, big freaking deal? That doesn't change the fact that they're good people and have a genuine interest in cars, not just car payments.
Irrelevant of that thread, I poked around other areas in the E9x forum and its all so superficial. I mean, on this section, we all have tons of money invested not only in the base car, like almost everyone else on this forum, but we focus attention to adding components to the car, and then we go back and rebuild engines dropping thousands and thousands of dollars hand over fist at relatively old cars.
For the most part, all of our cars are from say '88 - '00. Yeah there are some E46 and E60 guys, and now occasionally an E9x, and a few S54 roadster/coupes, but for the most part we're all modifying cars that are being considered "old". I was being called out by an E92 owner because I have an E34 and he was referring to my car as an old POS, ancient, etc., etc. Obviously unfounded, but what is more important to me is that the guys around these parts don't care what chassis you run because we all have a more technical grasp on things and understand that an E30 with an M52 makes it so much more than an old '88 325 M20 car. People can't see past that, and it really becomes apparent once you deviate from this section. I wouldn't even begin to argue with a single person over there about management and emission control and why our cars are superior platforms... because that will NOT go over well what so ever... but again, that doesn't even matter.
I just cannot believe that, having E34s, I was being called a spoiled rich kid by a kid with a 2007 328/2008 335. I think the BMW population is losing its grasp on reality.
Maybe I am letting things get to me, but it almost makes me sick seeing new school BMW owners bashing old school owners because their cars are, well, older. It's so easy to maintain a 2008 car under warranty... these guys have no idea what goes into our passion for our "old cars". Man, times change... but fortunately the group of people on here, although sometimes ideas conflict (which I think is healthy for everyone figuring things out..), have a very real concept of what goes into these cars.

I think the 335 has equal standing both on the FI board, and on the other. If I were moderating, Id let it stand in either.. or, if I had the time, Id scrutinize every post and allocate it based on content. Short of that, Id say that if a poster like Jim who spends most of his BF time over here, and most of whos posts are very definitely slanted in an FI direction, buys a turbo M3, hes likely going to be posting over here about it from an FI perspective, and will likely be comparing it to his other FI bmws. So his posts really ought to stay here.

I am with you Jon..:)
Altho I paid cash for my E36 when I bought it new, and every other car I own...and anything else I want..it is all irrelevant..
I get a kick out of these NEW guys degradating our cars, age of our cars, what we own, what we don't own... and perhaps even our abilities...
Not to mention the fact that our cars will smoke ANY of these new BMW's they feel so high and mighty about....
They have no idea...:(
Wait a second, there are other sections of bimmerforums.com?
Since about 6 months before I started my turbo project this is the only section I visit except for the for sale section (race cars and FI equipment of course) and Off topic.

Paul Jim's thread his little relevance in this thread I created I only used it as a transport as to why I was even over on the E9x forum. If it weren't for Jims thread being towed I'd never have found those people, because it wasn't until after it was towed that all the harassment began about who owns what or lives where or can afford ___. My point is only that this forum, no one has to prove anything to anyone in terms of what they can afford or can't. It all boils down in the end. Additionally, each of our personalities/goals seem to be portrayed more efficiently because of the type of questions/comments we pose. We don't really get a whole lot of "How to turn off parking lights with alarm button" type threads. Although informative, I guess, it's kind of like reading a user manual when you want to satisfy a craving for a good fictional story.

It's just depressing that some people cannot value the workmanship that goes into our cars. I know a lot of guy son here don't build their own stuff, but they come up with it at least. The 335 guy actually sat there at his keyboard and started criticizing my car saying that it's old, its slow, this, that... at the time my signature was an E34 trunk with methanol and nitrous. Even though I don't have dyno's published, you'd think people would give respect for that sort of amount of work. I dunno, I still love the older cars because we put them through paces that BMW probably neeeever imagined - if you can't respect that you really can't criticize people who can.

It's funny that this thread came about! I respect everyone on the board, weather or not I agree with you! It was a couple of days ago that I ventured out of the F/I section into the Kills section, and almost wish I never did! The amount of misinformation is outstanding! God for bid you post a technical question or response that contradicts the O/P, you will get eaten alive! I agree, this is one of the only sections of the forum that I continue to read/research and never have to worry regarding this aspect.

Go to most bimmer events and a majority of the people their are just dicks....
Especially the ones that have new cars with brand new HRE anything on them. They seem to say the wildest things sometimes. And have absolutely no clue in regards on how to drive or what else is out there....
Best is to see these people with their attitude actually attend a SCCA meet. They believe they are on "rails" and have such shitty times....or the ones that get into fender benders within the first 2-3 weeks of getting a new car....
I always tell them that the amount that you spend on a car will never negate you from the laws of physics....
Rather be around domestic guys or FI DIY guys. They are more open to talk to someone because most likely they have down a lot of the work themselves or have been humbled by the complexity of their projects...

So true - I go to most meets and people come over and start asking questions about my car and when I reply you can tell its way over their head. Completely fine - not everyone is a tech head. But its the guys who show up in E46 M3/E9x with 20's and the lowest suspension they can muster, darkest tint, loudest system, and then think they have 400 hp from an S54. Lately i've been hanging out with exclusively DIY guys and machine shop guys, and its way more fun and refreshing to cut the bullshit and get to the facts. No egos in the way.

Perception can be an interesting thing. It is truly amazing when people might know a lot about one subject so they transfer that ego onto a new subject which they might not know much or anything about. It is unfortunate. Not everyone can realize that they must be humble with things they do not know even though they might be a genius at one other particular thing. I know a lot about surfing but I don't know anything about boating. So I would admit that I don't know much more than bow or stern and need to be taught. These people purchase an e92 BMW or whatever and immediately think they know all about BMWs and their lineage. They mock what they don't understand. It is the large percentage of BMW owners that give the rest of us a bad name. They are the guys that act snobbish and try to race people with cheaper yet faster cars, only to get beaten and flip the bird while quickly pulling off an off-ramp nearly clipping a family in a mini-van in order to make their daring escape from humility. They will never understand the apartment renter with the pristine e34 or the small house renter who owns 3 pristine modified BMWs dating all the way back to e21 days. It is these guys who make the sacrifice, the guys who put aside the Seared Ahi for Mac & Cheese dinners, the guys who lost another girlfriend because they work on their car too much or they go to too many car meets, the guys who read The Bentley Manual on the toilet rather than Maxim Magazine...these are the true BMW enthusiasts.

I do the same. Its nice to see bmw owners truely digging into their cars, and I think people who just go out and buy the new 335 for the most part just understand buying a car, they don't understand the effort that goes into it. I ran into that issue a ton when I drove my pickup before I parked it and got my e30. Agreed, Although I see some postings from FI guys in the M3 forums too where there is also some good stuff. It just so happens to go FI just about any and everything else mechanical is required sooner or later so this is a great consolidated location where everyone usually behaves, is serious about hobbying (or are pro mechanics), and I speculate are more mature in age.

It is interesting that when I started cruising over and hanging with the e30 guys they seemed surprised. Probably because it doesn't happen very often. Guy drives e39 m5 to the meet and hangs with e30 guys...may not be the norm but hell man, I don't give a :censored:. Don't care if they all live with mom still or anything, they are cool and some have more knowledge than a lot of e36 or e46 guys. Plus they have hella funny personalities. :)
If a lot of people could look past brand names, whether something is new or not, how much someone makes, etc (all material aspects).....and be more objective regarding someone's knowledge, personality and hard work...then the world would be a better place.

I find the track forum to be populated with elitist wankers for the most part. I regularly see a thread with a video of some guy driving his car, with the intent to make fun of the driver's lack of ability. What I can't understand is, if everyone on the track forum are such skilled drivers, then where do all the poor drivers with the videos come from?
The track forum also is supposedly the "drag racing" sub forum which is an utter joke. Most threads about drag racing there are met with disparaging remarks from the aforementioned elitist wankers and the poor newbie drag racer is scarred for life, never to return.
I PMed Jay Hudson suggesting that the drag racing part be moved to the forced induction subforum, and was met with beuracratic drivel designed to provide hours of amusement to the moderators watching people jump through hoops.

Track/AutoX forum for suspension setups that are NOT drag strip related. :)

And yes I'd say 90% of the forum outside of the FI has no idea of any of the innards of our cars, or cars in general. I mean come on, we talk about motor builds, valving, grinding shit, etc etc etc, where everyone else is asking if a CAI will add 5 hp...

The Z3 forums is good if you own a Z3 car ;-)
I wouldn't talk, "elitist wanker".

I just wrote a long post and the stupid server locked up. Oh well, I'll shorten it.
e36 vert sub forum = good info, mature posts
e36 forum = good diy and what will break next info, immature posts on how loud is my CAI and will these 20" 85 lb chrom wheels fit
Kill Stories = all BS, insensitive use of the term rape (no girlfriends or sisters apparently)
Track = my source for suspension/handling info, non-drag racing driving info, help to start my autox career :)
FI = all things performance and deeply technical when it comes to making these things go
Guzzi forum = anarchy and good fun (no org to the info)
Beemer and Bimmer forums = thread nazis and way too serious half of the time
BTW - Bentley manual has been replaced by my new Helm's Acura MDX manual in the reading room/water closet

:buttrockThis is the only section I ever go to. Actually the bf.c link in my favorites is directly to the FI forum.
Lol same here! I originally had it go to bf.c's main forum page but I realized a few months back I only ever clicked on Forced Induction so I change the bookmark to bf.c FI! :redspot

In this case Robstah that thread contains a number of detailed posts by me offering my advice and thoughts on how you could get more out of your drag racing experience.

Wait a second, there are other sections of bimmerforums.com?
Since about 6 months before I started my turbo project this is the only section I visit except for the for sale section (race cars and FI equipment of course) and Off topic.Same, except when I'm stuck somewhere without anything to do, and its late and there is no new content.

OK, Guys/Gals,
I am a E60 owner with a newer car. I spend a lot of my time recently in the FI threads. I think you guys have a valid point here but if only you knew how you treat guys like me. I have asked a lot of questions and some of them may not have made any since and what i get is my head chopped off or ignored. Constantly called newbie or some other rude response. It's been pure hell trying to get information and I am about tired of being talked down to because i have a newer car or just don't know what you know.
I have never challenged any of you or talked down about how you may drive an older car nor have i talked about how my car cost or the class it is in. I am a rare occasion i am sure because how many E60 guys are adding the things the E36 guys are adding to their car. Not many.
But in all honesty some of you need to check yourself because i know for a fact a few of you guys have personally insulted me for asking for help and i have watched/read how you treat new guys coming into the FI threads. You all know who you are! Raise your hand on how many of you tried to help me with my project!!!! Be honest:)
I say we are all here to help each other and learn what the next guy knows and it's not about what model you drive because we all drive BMW's.
Show some love to the E60 guy.
Hope no one takes offense to this post but i wanted to let you'll know not all the owners of newer cars are assholes.

It doesn't come across as offensive, but more whiney/annoying.;)
Similar to a middle/high-school atmosphere, sharing your feelings of being upset/feeling mis-treated will generally backfire in the FI forum. Its not that as a whole the members arent compassionate, its just that no one wants to hear about someone else feeling "left out" or "ignored" of which I would say you have experienced neither.

And yes I'd say 90% of the forum outside of the FI has no idea of any of the innards of our cars, or cars in general. I mean come on, we talk about motor builds, valving, grinding shit, etc etc etc, where everyone else is asking if a CAI will add 5 hp...
Sounds about what i expect outta the e36 forum

E90 Forum is a joke, they don't understand anything over there except how to praise Shiv for creating the world beating software. The problem is that not one of them knows jack squat about cars. When I asked about the options for my car on my first post (to get an oil cooler and top speed limiter). I got nothing but a bunch of punk kids all saying use search. Ummm the car has been out 2 months is there already a knowledge bank on this, is this what forums are for?
As much conjecture as there is in this forum the knowledge base is huge. Go read some of the Dinan threads and look at their responses. Comparing piggybacks to flash software. They are a total joke....

I am with you Jon! :buttrock
Amen brother. nailed me to a tee. Although I can afford a new home, child support keeps me at bay. My e30 then SC e36 now my E46 soon to be boosted. A select few truely understand. Well said.
Eh - every forum on BF.com has its elitist streak.
If you think the FI forum is ANY exception then you're looking at this place through rose colored glasses. I can't count how many times people have been blatant cock gobblers regarding say... what turbo(or how 'big' it is) or what chemical additive they use to increase their engine's power here.
This is also not that technical of a forum...

Now I wouldn't say all S/C E46 M3 guys are that bad ;) . But then, I got my beginings in the E36 world, a long time ago in a galaxy far far away.....:cool .
I have been posting on BF.C since 2001. I have seen the personality of this board change considerably over that time. I started out in the E36 M3 forum, which was very good back then, but things have definitely changed, and not because I have learned a lot since then either. I then migrated to the Track/Auto-x forum since I got heavily into auto-x and modifying my car. After getting my E46, I started venturing into the FI forum as I researched the FI for my car (and continue to do so for my E36, FI is so damn addicting :shifty !!).
I do agree, however, that this forum and the Track forum are probably the two most informative ones here on BF.C, with the least amount of "drama."

UM, next time someone talks down to you challenge them to an engine tear down. In regards to people thinking your e34 is a piece of crap, don't forget when I told you at KOP that my family also thinks our '92 525i was a better driver's car than our '01 325xi. In the late 90's someone actually walked up to us in a parking lot to tell us how classic looking it was compared to the new stuff bmw was putting out, and asked us if we were interested in selling it.
And btw I also hang out almost exclusively here, which is why I don't really like seeing people asking topics to be towed when they aren't specifically FI. I think sometimes people just post here because they're familiar with the people and know that many of the members are more technically minded about the cars in general than in most other parts of the forum.

Thanks.
Yeah I am not concerned with what people think about my car - I know what it does and how it drives. I was just looking up weights last night and found E46 M3s are 3415 and weight is recorded for my car as 3428 lbs :confused That is... very awesome. It also gives me a better idea of how much power the car makes as I recently ran a lightly modded E46 M3. Interesting.
But, yeah people are concerned with mileage and year.. screw em.

ive migrated over to this section the past year or so.
after 4 years of non stop OT and other bs i figured why not educate myself in the world of FI.
im pretty happy with the threads and the amount of information there is in here. plus i like the fact that alot of people will just put a turbo/sc on their engine and run it till it breaks, and then just fix whatever is broken. My old man always taught me dont fix it if nothings broken. So one of these days im gonna go FI on my Ti or my next car that i get.
props to all the DIY's out there!

havent not read any of the replies, i can state that i only hang in the FI section!
People here seem to have a much better grasp of what makes a car nut tick, and how car nuts like working on cars - oh, and what makes cars tick :P
As for old? try a '76 E21 :)
that thing broke my wallet into very small pieces, but i still loved it :)
as for me driving something that has boost? i dont :(
I got to take the bosses boosted subaru out for a spin the other day - does that count ? :P
Great people here, even if they do drive on the wrong side of the road :P
