So I have searched around and read conflicting information on this..

I'm dropping my m50 back in this weekend or next, and i'm not sure whether to install the transmission first, or to install it from underneath after the engine is in the engine bay. The second option seems easier, but according to the bently manual and some people, the oil pan won't clear the steering column if the transmission is installed.

The transmission that is going in is a 5-speed ZF. Pulling the engine out, with a GM automatic was impossible, and I had to pull the trans from underneath.

I'd really like to have the transmission installed with everything put together before dropping the engine in, but I just want to hear from someone who's personally done it or seen it done.

Personally I would think the trans first then put it in the car method. Thats how I took my M50/trans out of my wrecked 325is, and it was much easier than trying to do it with it in the car. Obviously, since I had the entire front clip removed, this made it slightly easier.

Has anyone done it with the transmission installed, steering column installed, and front end installed?
