I'm getting a set of Style 32's from a friend. We test fitted them with the enormous 5er 235/45-17 tires they had and it's going to fit, it's just a matter of running the right E36 sized tire. The rims are 17x8" ET20. It seems like something around a 225/40-17 (a pretty much non-existant size), 215/40-17, 215/45-17, or 205/45-17 is going to be the best bet.
Advice?

With an 8" width, I'd look at 235/40-17.

I don't think it'd fit. The tire on the 235/45-17 was sticking outside the fender. I know its oversized but the width would be the same. I am running 235/40-17 on my 17x8" BBS RK's but the offset is 38 as opposed to 20 on the 32's.

As soon as I posted, I realized you were trying to run some pretty low offset wheels. I wonder what 215s will look like on 8" wheels?

Well, 215/45-17 is pretty spot on to OEM sizing, its actually slightly larger overall diameter than 235/40-17. It'll be stretched but I need it to be.

You'll need the stretch to fit it...and maybe some fender lip rolling and pulling. Don't forget hubcentric rings to help ensure proper fit due to difference in hub sizes, running without them may cause vibration & shimmy issues later.

Thanks! Anybody know what size hub centering rings I need? It's looking like 215/45-17 is going to be the best choice.

Check with TireRack on the hubcentric rings...you need to fill the gap between your hub bore of 72.6mm and the E39 wheels' 74.1mm

Im running 215/40's on mine now but i have the e36 style 32's if i were you id run 215/40 to keep from rolling as much. If you run a 45 you may rub on bigger bumps. you can get down to a 195 in 40 or 45 and get a bit of stretch(again will help cut down on the rubbing)
Once i put my et20 wheels on im running 195/s on an 8 but im pretty low.

Not to rain on your parade but you bought the wrong set. The 5er's have a lower offset which means they are meant to stick out whereas the sets which fit E36 have a 41 offset. I know because I have a staggered set for sale listed from my Z3.

The Style 32 from a Z3 would be the best fit. Those from the E39 not only have a low offset but would require hubcentric rings which, by the way, will not completely eliminate the vibration. 225/45-17s would be the best bet.
Do take note that the Style 32 from the Z3 is a staggered set. 7.5x17 front and 8.5x17 rear with 225/45-17 & 245/40-17 tires, respectively.
I've fitted the staggered Style 32s from my Z3 onto my lowered 325i and it's a perfect fit with the wider rears filling up the rear wheelwell nicely with the above-mentioned tire sizes. Not only do they look good but the car ran perfectly with them. No shimmies, no hub rings, no stretched tires, no rubbing.
My Style 32s are currently being refinished for final fitment on my 325i replacing the DS1s I currently have in there.
And in reference to post #7, for info's sake, E39s have a hub of 74.1mm while the E36 have a hub of 72.56mm.

Why would you change your perfectly sized BBS RK for a style 32? I mean the 32's looks great but they got nothing on the BBS.

Damn! I've had 32's on both of my E36's. Never realized so many people were running/attempting to run these. I always get compliments on my wheels

Thanks. 215/40 is tiny, I don't really want to go that small. I am going to try 215/45 I think, I don't think its going to rub, my car isn't as low as yours.

Thanks, but I know all about offset. I have already test fit the rims, and they are going to work just fine. They are ET20 whereas my RK's are ET38, but they will still work with a slight stretch. By the way, cars don't have offset, wheels do, so its not right to say that an E36 has a "41 offset".

They also don't fill the fenders as well! I've run hubcentric rings WITH spacers for years on my E30 and never had any shimmy whatsoever. That is mostly internet myth, or people running spacers that aren't hubcentric.

I am keeping the RK's of course. I just want these for fun as a second set of rims. They are being painted gold/bronze. I am getting them on the cheap from a friend who bought Forgelines for his E36.
Dont run 215 45's they rubbed bad on my e36. use 40's

Why would they rub? They are the same size as the stock diameter tires.

Nope, not a myth but an actual personal experience and also experiences of some others. No spacers involved, just hub rings. You're a lucky dude then if you had run with hubrings with no issues.

Well, that is my personal experience, but I appreciate your input.

exactly.
All the stretch guys that are running 215's are running 40 series. You have to lower your car to make it look right, coil overs.:alright;)

OK, rather than parse words, let me be clear. E36 vehicles accept wheels having certain ranges of offsets without either sticking out of the wheel well or needing spacers to look right. Low offset wheels will stick out of the wheel well. But since you are knowledgeable on the subject but picked up these wheels on the cheap, I'd think you'd know what you paid for and wouldn't mind some feedback you posted responses for.

I apologize for that attitude, it was unnecessary. I am appreciate the input. I realize these rims will stick out just slightly, and will need some stretch to clear the fenders. I was certain 215/45-17 would fit, but based on feedback it seems like 215/40-17 is the way to go. But I don't think my car is low enough to pull off that tire size.

No harm, no foul. Hope everything works out with the wheels.

215 45 is taller than stock
40 is the way to go with that low of an offset
