I use Valvoline 10w-40 "max life" in mine. All I care about is that the weight is appropriate for the temperature, and that the oil has the ACEA A3 rating. From there, the next most important thing is that I can buy it in gallon or larger jugs; I don't need to pay the premium for 8 empty plastic containers when two will suffice. :D

The rest seems to be pretty much just speculation and marketing hype.

How Many Quarts?

I don't know how cold it get where you are, but I don't imagine it is cold enough to need a "5" cold weight oil. That would be pretty thin on start up. I would think something starting with at least a 10 would be better suited to your climate. Remember, the 1st number is cold temperature viscosity.

7 quarts for a 6 cylinder. I use mobil 1 5w30, and 5w40 in the winter.

I ran 10w40 for awhile and it was just too thick for VA weather in the summer.

I use M1 15w50, I have nothing good nor bad to say about it.

those of you using M1 5w30 or 10w30, you may want to reconsider using that 25 weight oil.

The only reason i ask is, I just did a oil change with 15w50 and now have a lifter tick. and yes it is full of oil. I used 5w30 before and had no prob.

btw the head was rebuild 10k ago.

it could be too thick for your particular motor as mine runs it quietly though not as quietly as any castrol syntec oil. some motors wear differently then others. :dunno

it's not too thick as per BMWs recommendations, they feel that 15w50 is an appropriate oil to run in the summer.

From what I've read over the years, vast majority of wear on engine is on a cold start, when the oil film is thinnest. Many many new cars call for 5w-30, with thinking being that we want to get the oil flowing quickly.
Will full synthetic, like M1, you get the protection all the way up to the rated (upper) weight. I vote for 5w as the low # certainly for winter, and 5w-40 for summer

WTF? Cold start is where you want the best flowing oil mate!

this is why a 0w40 is perfect for our cars.
