Anyone know what the difference in filters for the cosmos intake is performance-wise between the k&n and the amsoil? And also I would like to know what the function and benefits of the hydro wrap is/are? I'm assuming to keep water out...but wouldn't that restrict air flow???? If someone could educate me on this it would be greatly appreciated! -LoGaN

K&N are oiled filters. AFAIK, and from what I could tell on their site, Amsoil are dry type filters.
With K&N, you need to oil them periodically. If you use too much, it can ruin your MAFS. There are even the occasional cases where they come with too much oil from the factory and ruin the MAFS. K&N is simply banking on brand recognition, there are filters that flow better, filter better, are dry, and last longer.
Also, yes, a hydrowrap will be more restrictive, but the difference is negligible. You'll have more difference day to day with weather variations and ambient air temp than you'd ever notice with the hyrdowrap. It's a must, IMO.

I'm one of those occasional cases.
I went with Amsoil with my Cosmos.

How often do you need to replace the filter...and do you have to replace the hydro wrap or can that be reused??

hydrowrap ftl!....
get an intake bypass valve. no air restriction at all and same purpose as a hydro wrap.
Aem intake bypass valve.

The hydrowrap over the filter will mean less dirt and other materials wont go into the filter. Meaning you trade power for life.

where can I get an intake bypass valve...and does it have any negative affects (power loss, flow loss, has to be replaced?)

i dont think you really need either, in order to hydrolock your car, you have to entirely submerge the air filter under water. that is very hard to do, considering the filter sits a few feet above the ground.

thanks!

NOOO!
Dude, get the hydrowrap. No reason not to.
I PROMISE you, if you take the wrap off you WON'T be able to feel a difference. The filter sits about a 10" off the ground, not a few feet. The intake bypass is just a waste of money, just get the hydrowrap and be done with it. The power change is negligible, and the life of the filter increases, and you have a mjuch lower chance of hydrolock.
AND, the filter DOES NOT need to be submerged to hydrolock. You have a halfway decent rain, you hit one puddle you didn't see that splashes your filter, and your engine is gone.

i disagree, but its really not that big of a deal. i cant imagine being dumb enough to drive that deep into water with my bmw, but might as well get it if it makes you feel on the safe side

Actually, you don't even need to drive into deep water. Think about this, heavy rain, you get stuck behind a semi or even some other car, especially if you have the brake duct mod, and its spraying a bunch of water from the tires, it can go through, and though unlikely, there is the chance of hydrolocking it.
Or, if the storm is heavy enough, you could remotely end up ingesting enough water just from driving if you're going freeway speeds for extended amounts of time.
The chances of hydrolocking it *are* slim, that's for sure, but why take the risk? Hell, even if there was a few HP difference, isn't it worth it? BMW motors are NOT cheap, and you don't wanna buy a new one because you didn't wanna put a 20 dollar protector on your filter for a negligible difference you can't feel because it might cost you a few HP, which you'd easily gain or lose depending on the weather anyway.
