I thought I would ask here what the differences are between the E39 M5 model years? Anything I need to be careful about/look for in a used model? Probably won't be buying for several months but I am in my info collection phase.

Haven't decided to sell the M3 or not, sigh, I love this car.

The only things I can tell are..

In 2001+ you get AE's, and LED Rears, also the NAV was updated to a 16x9 screen in 2001, and the steering wheel is smaller in the 2001. Other than that, they are the same in power.

Try www.bmwtips.com - It's an E39 website.

Going Beast! My 2003 has a chunky steering wheel and DVD based Nav. 4 year 50k free service helps too.

Hopefully going to happen this summer. I know production is stopping soon. Probably going for a "lightly" used model.

M3/4 getting too small? The 540i/6 classifieds always catch my attention. :)

LOL!

Thought about going FI on the M3 but milage is creeping up to over 60K. Not that reliability has been an issue but new job this summer is going to require a LOT more driving for me... and the M5 are starting to price in the sub $60K range.

...I always liked the 540i 'Sport' models, there pretty rare, not quite an M5, but just as Sexy!! IMO

definately go with the beast, of course its gonna have a larger feel, not as nimble as the 3er but you get all that hp in a M5:D

540i 6's are hot, and after you s/c them there fast, but theres nothing like raw engine power of the M5
