I installed a short shifter in my BMW and the throws, although shortened and more sporty, are MUCH notchier and the force to put it in each gear has increased. It has increased to the point where it was a pain to get into each gear. I would hold my clutch out at idle because it was so hard to push it into first gear.

I put in the UUC RK2 Magnum knob in and whoa what a huge difference. The difference was not too noticeable with my stock lever but the shortened one, the heavier knob made such a difference. Now the gearbox feels smooth again. The notchiness is much reduced and going into any gear is easy.

I HIGHLY recommend a heavier weight (but maybe not extremely heavy - since this is bad too) shift knob for everyone who has a short shift kit in their BMW's.

Rogue Engineering offers a WSR (Weighted Selector Rod) that does the same thing and is included in their kit only that it does it in a much safer place (under the shifting mechanism) and thus eliminating all of the synchro wearing concerns that are associated with a heavier knob. I have their kit and I can say that it does its job pretty well. Also you can get just the selector rod if you already have some sort of short shift kit already.
