Just a little indication what I have been doing since the Fourth of July. Looking at the pics pay no attention to the block I am using for setup, the car will have a (Twin Turbo) M50 based BMW motor in it using a GM turbo 400 full race trans and run on E85 fuel. I am personally building this car (I do this for a living) and intend to have it at the track mid spring 2008. I will post more pics as I take them. ///J.T.///

I am confident the car will run 8s before long. With enough power that chassis will handle 7 second passes.

99% of people on this forum do not understand that power is the easy part. No unibody chassis car will ever compete with a chassis car like this on the quarter mile.

The current certification on the chassis will be good to 6.00 et. Not that I will ever expect that but then again the reason for the dual engine type mounting. ///J.T.///

with the better strips in US, and favourable altitude density thet you guys seem to have regularly, this car should give things a shake up, I believe V.S. Motor holds the current record at 7.63 @ 182mph, so the bar is set pretty high by the Scandinavians.

Twin 68mm is the rule for pro rwd. I am not tryin to fit any class, this is a toy so the sky is the limit. I will run pro test & tune. LOL I have to try and get the efficiency correct for the HP , rpm, and psi I want to run. It is not that simple just to bolt the monster turbo on and go fast. Completely different cars. JT and i only live 30miles from eachother and hes coaching tom and my supergas car.

His car is a full tube chassis car using the original sheetmetal body ONLY (no floor pan or firewall). This is where you "roll your own." No OE BMW main component is used besides exterior body and the engine.

Ours is a 3/4 tube frame car using the original front unibody and all the original sheetmetal including floor pan and firewall and using the original BMW suspension.

As for our car........3/4 tube chassis is called a "back half car" in that the back half is cut out to use a different rear suspension/driveline. We're using a ford 9" and a 4-link suspension; same as JT is using.

Actually I think the US M50 based motors are under rated. There are pro rwd cars out there with the same cid running 6.40s. My goal is to knock on the door of the sweeds with what we are given here at the US dealer. Really! CC and ICS have proved to me that the HP we need to make is acheviable. Without the constraints of shock towers, firewalls, weight, and incorrect suspension(for dragracing)more HP is avaliable to put down to the pavement. I personally have put well over 1800 hp through a 400 turbo without any problems. Also the lower gear in the trans and 3 speeds will help the car off the line, thus the reason for the 400. There will be no lifting off the throttle between shifts so no loss in forward momentum will be lost due to disconnecting the driveline with the clutch for shifting. There aer several more expensive trans out there but I can get the job done without the serious expense. ///J.T.///

couldn't S54B32 fit your goal of something available in US, and could be competitive in sport compact as well for not a lot of diference in build time or cost? the head has a lot more flow potential than M50 (or US S50) head, I am lead to believe (although sometimes easily lead) better flow potential than 2jz head as well, will be awesome car either way, just makes more sense to me to have a class to race in

MrBlonde
08-07-2007, 01:49 AM
Agreed Alan. You don't want to go over 3.5 litres or there is no home for you in NHRA Sport Compact. Similar with turbo sizes.

Unfortunately this sort of car would have to run in NHRA SC Modified ... tough competition.

This is what people do not understand about the VS Motor racecar. The engine capacity and turbo sizing is way outside the SC class rules. Does that matter? Not in Sweden, but it means people think the Swedes are way ahead of SC cars .. but they aren't.

Actually I challenge that notion that an M50 head can outmatch an S54 head .. both modified with all available skill.

Why not run a powerglide? I suppose a 3 speed is good because you wanna keep the revs up, but eliminating a shift would be nice. Also less power to turn a glide, (but it seems squeezin every last hp is really a necessity with this package) Might work with a big enough converter and the right rear end gears

A deadenbear or coan glide (with dedenbear case) will handle far beyond the power that VS motor is putting through theirs.

There are guys out there putting 2500+HP thru heavily modified glides. We're talking ceramic coated 7075 drums, straight cut superset planetaries, enlarged and ringless vasco 300 or pro-X hardened shafts, 10 clutches, deadenbear supercase, kevlar bands, etc etc etc etc etc.

If you want a bulletproof trans........you pay the price. The PRO-X glides start at like $5500 and thats without a converter. Matching converter would be around another $1500..........

You can blast a 400 pretty good and itll hold together where a lower power glide can take a complete shit on you. Theyre fragile in a sense. Our 400 is under rated for our upper power level but off the record, Coan says itll handle 1000HP for a season if yer "a little nice to it." lol

Just out of curiosity, when building a full blown racer like this, is there an official way to designate whether the car is still considered a bmw 3-series? I mean if you had an m50 block and 3-series body panels (even those aren't really oe since they're fg and cf), but nothing else on the car came from bmw would the car still be technically a bmw 3-series?

not sure why you'd want to mess with stiffening the mains though. Idea is to have the crank flex with the block. (or probably more appropriately stated the block flex with the crank.)

Agreed that S54B32 is the engine of choice here. For NHRA sport compact you've got the 3.5 litre limit so you'd go with the S38 but that's big money. Given the turbo size limits for MODIFIED (for backhalf cars) you're pushing shit uphill with 3.2 litres, let alone 3.0 litres.

But I suspect this is not being built to Sport Compact Modified class regulations anyway.

StreuB1
10-15-2007, 09:43 AM
Among its variants, the original S38 was 3.5L. It then progressed to 3.6 then finally 3.8L in 1991.

S38B35 meets the 3.5L clip then, obviously.

The euro motor JT is using was suggested over other motor options by people making the highest HP on a BMW engine in the world. I think he chose the right one based on that.

In the world of FI......3.0 to 3.2L is more of a wash. JT will make the power required with either displacement. Given that, its a mute point.

And about the girdle.

The main caps sway and waver when subjected to 1000+ HP on an engine like this. Its strong, but its not made for it. The girdle does the same thing as a rocker girdle does in pushrod V8's. Ties all the points together in an attempt to stiffen the area thats being subjected to stress.

Just like the cylinder head, the mains flex in waves along with the combustion process. Tieing them together helps lessen the wave and also help distrubute the stresses across the entire bottom end.

This is nothing new for engines. They use this same idea on the valve train and the mains in lots of engines. The mitsubishi 4G63 and the nissan RB2x actually incorporate the main caps into the girdle as one monolithic piece. This makes the bottom end EXTREMELY robust.

Saying its not needed to a racecar builder with 30+ years of experience is kinda....hmmm.... -searches for word-

I forgot that the E28's had S38B36's I always thought they were M88 - I thought E24 M6 were M88's, bah either way. I think an S38 at 3.5L might not be the best as someone said if you have to clean up the bore requiring anything other than a light hone you would be leaving the bracket.

As for the girdle - I really like the idea. If you guys have seen the 4G63 as Streub has mentioned, each cap is part of the next, it's a good design. Well, given their tendency to crank walk I think it was required, but yeah a girl is a great idea IMHO.

You usually run into issues on the crank when you stiffen the block. Most european engines are designed with a very different mentality to most domestic engines. A domestic engine assumes no flex, so flex kills it. The european engine designers are a lot better at handling the math of a flexible block. they have to be when dealing with a flexible crank like the one found in the M50 based/sized motors. The european blocks are designed to move with the crank. The flex is needed for the long term survival of the engine.

Stiffening most relatively modern european designed engine usually ends up counterproductive. We saw this with the kent block even. Moreso when we moved to mounting them as a stressed member in formula cars.

More power/torque will likely increase the need for flexibility of the block unless the crank is proportionally stiffened. Flexibility is a good thing though.

The big power BMW engines in Sweden (over 800 hp) use a mains girdle to stiffen the block. (but the builders dont make it public knowledge as it gives away to the competition)

I cant see how having block flex on a high hp engine can be better than having a stiff setup that can stay rigid and solid with the power level you are running.....

Reread what I said above.

The blocks arent meant to handle 1000+ HP so the mains buck and sway in its wrath. The girdle here just like in other engines where girdles are used. Is meant to tie together and stiffin the mains.

Would it be better if I used the statement "The girdle UNIFIES the mains to flex and sway in a more trained fashion."

Better?

This is getting OT. It works obviously because the company we all look up to uses them in all their high HP motors including the M20 even.

The annalogy of the bridge is a good one. And he is right with that. But the girdle would be like adding a stiffening member across the tops of the piers of the bridge. So when one tries to sway excessively, the load is spread across to the other piers and into the pylons into the ground below. Its not stopping the swaying, its just lessening it and spreading the load out.......unification.

Look into rocker girdles and the reasons they use them. Same reason.

techno550
10-15-2007, 11:18 AM
The girdle doesn't look like it would stiffen the block itself warp or bending, which is a good thing. I'm mainly concerned bout the loads it could put on the caps in bending. That crank operates through its first torsional and first bending. Especially being on extended studs.

The block isnt an issue as much as the main caps. Theyre the ones that are under load during combustion. Thats why high power or high reving V8's splay their main cap bolts........two down into the webs and then two splayed into the sides. That puts two in tension and two in partial shear. This ties the root of the mains into the cap and then the block sides into the cap further tieing it all together. The caps are always teh weak point in any block design thats pushed to the limit since they are what restrains the crank under the massive load of combustion.

If we could splay our main caps.......gosh that would be badass.

The main caps still need to be trained to the others. Theyre tall and thin and sway in relation to the crank. Compare the webs and caps of our motor to a high HP racing motor.......lots of difference. Even comparing it to the S14 Euro block one can see a massive difference. The webs that tie the roots of the mains to the sides of the block are heavily gussetted from the factory and the ribs are ALOT thicker.

Another aspect proving Euro motors > US motors.

I never said "don't do it". I said that you may run into issues, and I cited why. I was fairly certain that just me saying something wouldn't change your mind on it. I wanted to point out potential issues while you still had time to do more research on those potential problems. I just saw it as a potential mistake that I've seen before and should at least let you know of the possibilities.

I've also said before that everything is a compromise. Perhaps this is a known compromise that you've already selected. On the formula fords, mounting the engine as a stressed member shortened the rebuild interval as well as the replacement interval for some of the *not usually replaced during a standard rebuild* parts. the car was lighter, stiffer, and faster though. The root cause of the engine longevity problem (stiffening the motor and stiffening the chassis) was identified, and most elected to continue to run it like that anyway since it was faster. There are tons of other examples of stiffening a block and it having adverse results.

I *assume* that you have a lot of experience with big domestic things. Small european stuff can be somewhat different. There are many that have crossed from one to the other and they tend to try to bring what they did on one and apply it to the other. Doesn't always translate. Especially if you did something that way because someone else did it that way.

I suspect that the girdle was a largely domestic (U.S. Americans ;)) thing, and migrated to use by europeans that wanted to know *how* the americans were making so much power. in the 60's and 70's, big power generally meant big iron. Someone fixed a problem on a given design using that, and that was adopted by others. that made its way to sweden apparently, and now you're following that too.

I'm sure a drag racing engine development program looks quite different than a road racing one, but the same principles to the methodology still probably apply.

We see the same now on the forums. A couple years ago, your average *new* E36 owner had just sold his civic. The first thing he wanted was a CAI, a catback, and a BBTB. On an E36, those provide louder, louder, and reduced throttle control. On the honda, they may have done more.

Chassis certs are given by the sanctioning body you intend to race in. There is no such thing as a "certified chassis builder" if I recall until you begin building rear engine dragsters SFI 2.3M (rear engine dragster alcohol/nitro 6.29sec+ or front engine dragtster 6.29+) 10.1E (funny car.)

You build per the spec.....then you take it to a chassis certification tech. Chassis certification tech shops are listed on the sanctioning bodys websites. They then inspect the car and put a sticker on the chassis for when it was inspected, the ET window its certified in and how long its good for. You can build per a specification and actually get a certification to a SLOWER window due to certain aspects not passing tech........or you could fail completely and get no certification.

I could be wrong though.

The majority of JT's cars are certified in the SFI 25.x classes with the fastest being the 25.2 and 25.1E classes (tube chassis door cars 7.49sec and quicker.)

The supergas car Tom and I are building I THINK is loosely built to SFI 25.5.....or it would be if we added an F/C driver cage.

Here is a ProMod he built from the ground up........I believe this is an SFI 25.1 certified chassis.......

And once you get into the 10sec barrier.......there is no longer a such thing as a "formality" at any race track. You can break out of yer tech time and run 11's and pass under the radar at some tracks.........the moment you hit 10.99 (and tech above that) anywhere, you got people up yer ass the moment you exit the return road for post run inspection.

And once you get into the 10sec barrier.......there is no longer a such thing as a "formality" at any race track. You can break out of yer tech time and run 11's and pass under the radar at some tracks.........the moment you hit 10.99 (and tech above that) anywhere, you got people up yer ass the moment you exit the return road for post run inspection.
..

Exactly. Hnce why I was booted in August 2004 until I had full technical inspection with chassis sticker.

It's different for Andreas in Sweden; there are so few rules for him he runs 150+ MPH with no parachute and radials on the front. You can see fro mthe videos the track is not NHRA spec ...

It's different for Mike Radowski, Ulysses, Geroge, etc. They avoid the technical inspections by either running one pass before getting booted or running at private track hires where the "officials" look the other way.

The upside is you don't have to do the work to meet tech (or perhaps cut up your street car to fit a 6 point welded roll cage). The downside is you're running 142+ MPH without the safety equipment that 50+ years of NHRA competition has shown saves lives.

If you want to know how NHRA came up with those safety rules, usually each one represents somebody who is dead.

Seems really odd that one would want to go faster and not get the minimum safety equipment for themselves or their cars...

Full Face Helment
Fire Suit
Wanting car to be certified in regards to safety.
Full roll cage.

I guess they must feel invincible or something. But seen a couple bad crashes on the street and the track...

For your safety please get your safety equipment right...your family will thank you for it later....:embarrasm

Well before NHRA decided they were losing money not doing chassis inspections there was a SEMA approved chassis builder. I had my SEMA approval so yes I am certified . Then NHRA decided to inspect and certify cars on their own. They now put out a rule book and the chassis builder needs to BUY a chassis spec sheet determined on how fast the vehicle will go. Based on that you then have your car built or modified to meet the specs and have it certified by an NHRA official and tagged. Failure to do any of this will result in you being bounced from the NHRA sanctioned track. Actually anyone can build a car now if you follow the procedures sanctioned by NHRA. I am building my car to Pro RWD rules even tho it might not get to the level they run. That is the closest class to the build I am doing. Personally I think NMCA fastest street car shootout can be fun and more to my liking. Twin 66mm turbos I believe is the limit. I know for a fact the Titan car is running Twin 68mm (well that is what they told me LOL). They are running 3 liter. Even tho I am running a mostly steel body I should weigh close to the same as they are without adding weight. They have to add weight to make them legal. I have more experience with the turbo 400 and I have an outlet for all the parts I need. Thanks guys ///J.T.///

Funny thats what I tell my customers that want to short cut safety items. This is the order of impotance chassis builders SHOULD follow. SAFETY---accessability---speed ---weight. If you follow this order the driver will have the best chance of surviving an upset. ///J.T.///

Here's a brief list of the things I had to do to be NHRA compliant once I ran quicker than 10.999:

+ Tailshaft loop to NHRA spec
+ SFI 4.1 ballistic blanket around bellhousing
+ Parachute (This is mandatory for 140MPH + passes for ANDRA. For NHRA it's 150 MPH) - believe me this is a lot of work. It has to be mounted and then the cable and trigger set up in the cabin
+ Six point rollcage to spec, welded into the vehicle
+ Wheel studs
+ Exhaust. Pipes must terminate below sill panel level and direct gasses to the rear. Turbocharged vehicles require two 3/8” bolts in the exhaust pipe at 90 degree angles to prevent debris exiting pipe.
+ Must place a 3” blue equilateral triangle marking the location of the battery
+ Battery isolation switch located in the battery location marker (accessible externally)
+ Technical Inspections. Require a tech inspection by an NHRA Technical Inspector every two years with appropriate update to NHRA vehicle log book
+ Arm Restraints. Required attached to driver’s forearms to prevent arms from extending beyond confines of roll cage
+ Head Protector. A padded head protector at the back of the driver’s helmet
+ Roll cage must be padded wherever the drivers head or body could make contact
+ Helmet. Require helmet meeting AS 1698 1974/1988
+ Protective Clothing. Require fire resistant gloves, shoes and socks. Driving suit meeting SFI 3.2A/5
+ Five point harness with crotch strap

That covers the vehicle, but for the driver:

+ NHRA race licence for apprpriate performance/class. Mine requires a yerly medical examination.

+Race vehicle Log Books. NHRA log book includes info when you get your tech inspection. Must be with car at all times

+ Performance Testing. All new holders of a race licence must undergo a performance test (solo half pass and then a full pass) to the satisfaction of a track steward. This includes a "blindfold test" to demonstrate you can trigger your parachute without using your eyes.

Last note, Vehicles quicker than 9.99 requires a purpose built racing seat (like a Kirkey aluminium seat mounted so the seta back touches the taxi bar of the rollcage.)

-Dave

EDIT: After reading the second hand info posted elsewhere on BFc:

Our 7.50 cage was not certified due to an issue on the front down bar where it meets the rocker sill

At the last minute I arranged to get BOTH of the BL cars CERTIFIED by our NHRA guy. BOTH BL cars were at his place to get certed and BOTH CARS FAILED THE INSPETION. The cages were not built to NHRA spec therefore they failed. 2in belts in a 7.70 car doesn't fly. Not having 6x6 plates does not fly either. Having a cut off switch INSIDE a trunk instead of outside doesn't pass tech either. I can go on but it would be pointless. Oh and having belts 5 years expired doesn't help much either.
So the rollcages did not pass NHRA technical inspection (AKA "tech"). That means the roll cages are not built according to the safety rules (looks like the mouhnting plates were not 6"x6").
Also the harnesses do not meet tech for the ET/Trap speed the cars run (looks like they are 2" and not 3" and also they are out of date).
Also the battery isolator swtich is inside the truck when it must be accessable from the outside of the vehicle.

These issues tell me the vehicles have never been through a technical inspection before.

One thing I hope everyone realizes.

We're ALL (even us locals) very very very lucky to be able to see a pro chassis car being build step by step. Its something very very rare to see. No shops document and then make public the building of an entire car. For one, most all chassis builders operate secretly and quietly. Usually if any pictures are posted, theyre very small and of low quality so people CANNOT see certain aspects. JT has nothing to prove and nothing to hide and wants nothing more than to expand all of our understanding, knowlege and respect for this "hobby" he holds so close.

We're all very lucky to have JT WANT to show us this.

Personally, I feel privleged. I hope the rest of you that find interest in this also feel as such.

I see a vertical mount Euro S50 with custom GM auto bellhousing adapter and a kickass custom ITB/water air built in intake manifold. I learned something new from the first thread. Swapping the stock rubber injector o-rings for viton o-rings might be a good idea. More of a doh! why didn't I think of that idea. The info on stock fuel tank sheet metal coatings was interesting too.

Does anybody sell a stainless fuel rail? Aluminium wouldn't last long, methinks.

I asked Ross Machine Racing about machining a stainless steel fuel rail and they were not interested at the time. They are great guys though.

The common solution is to get a normal aluminum rail hard anodized, it's what methanol race cars run from what I have read.

Making a stainless rail isnt hard. Jim, we'll talk tonight on AIM

Why would aluminum not last "long"?

'splain please?

I believe he is referring to the significantly corrosive effects of methanol in the presence of aluminum, and the lesser but nonetheless notable corrosive effects of ethanol in the presence of aluminum.

If it can be bought for somewhere near the price of an RMR aluminum rail plus the cost of hard anodizing, seems like it would be a bargain. The -6 RMR aluminum rail went for $250 when I bought one. I am not sure how much hard anodizing costs.

the part that i dont think can be overcome is anodizing the small ID over such a long distance. Getting a stinger down the middle of that and not touching the part will be hard

Your right, its easy.
Just takes someone with the right skills, machinery and desires and the BMW Fi scene just got a whole heap of stainless fuel rails :)

I imagine the demand for methanol fuel systems for street BMW would be huge.

What kind of racing, sorry i didn't see it posted. going fast in a straight line (which is not racing) or road course racing/Auto-X type racing

*Edit*
never mind figured it out from the other pictures

If you didn't know, E85 is available at the pump in America, especially in Illinois. If I'm going to buy a fuel system, it should be able to withstand anything! :)

I'm pretty sure that two cars trying to get to an end point the fastest qualifies as racing... just because it's not your kind doesn't mean it's not "real".

Go troll somewhere else. :)

There are ethanol blend fuels in Australia and around the world, E85 isn't going to damage your OEM fuel rail ;-)

For those who aren't aware, race cars that run methanol have to flush their fuel system clean after every race meeting. It's not something for street cars.

Nobody plans on running methanol in their street car. But running E85 at high horsepower will require larger fuel lines, dual pumps and larger fuel rail. If buying a rail, why not get one with the lowest chance of damage from 85% ethanol?

Short version, stop causing problems!

I'm not causing problems, simply stating my opinion that E85 does not mean you need stainless steel fuel lines. OEM fuel rails will work perfectly well.

And what is the limits to how much fuel they flow?

I agree that they're safe, they're stainless or at least steel.

I'm sorry, was your point that E85 contains ethanol and therefore will damage an OEM fuel rail or is your point that high horsepower street BMWs may require upgraded fuel systems? You've got me confused now.

Actually after reading more about E85 fuels I realise you're right. I was thinking E85 had like 10% ethanol (like 100 RON pump gas) but it's 85% ethanol. You would need to look at stainless steel lines and fittings.
