i dont know if its even possible to get the GT1 software to work with anything but the diag head or OPS

the head communicates over LAN and is actually a windowsCE based computer
i know someone that made a cloned OPS head but he never got the voltage recognition working and dropped the project
i should give him a call and see where the leftovers are

would there be any interest for such a unit?
probably somewhere in the low 4 figure range for working ones??

I know someone who may be able to supply them for a nice cost, so 4k is kinda expensive :\ Also, it's much better to salvage a old laptop and install it on..Vmware support is very cracky...plus you'd have to setup alot of different things that makes no sense :P

problem with old laptops is the ram. i just bought an old laptop with a com port but the ram is only upgradeable to 128meg. iirc dis needs 256meg. so you need a laptop w/com and upgradeable to 256meg.

dell latitude c600 and hp omnibook both are excellent for GT1 and have very similar hardware to the original machine

DIS runs fine w/ ram at 128 mb, I installed this on many machines successfully, and also 256mb ram when Gt1 came out was like 2gb today, it's uncommon :P Gt1/sss can be retooled to work with a k-line adapter, of course some functionality i assume is lost. Hp omnibook and Thinkpads are the choices I use for a Gt1 installation, it has flawless installation and drivers are out of the box, and dealing with sco...especially with server 5.5, drivers are a non-existant thing :P

It runs fine on VMWare. I have had zero problems. I have been using it under VMWare for four months.

I would not mess with an old PC or laptop. It is a royal pain to get installed if you have the wrong size disk (or modified the scripts.)

I can get new Dell Lattitudes with COM/DB9 ports for 800ish, 2gb of ram and Turion Procs.

Very interesting. Would be a huge help to smaller independents that can't get
there hands on a GT1, Dis, or Modic (are any of these even still in use). Now that dealers will be going to 3G starting this fall with complete integration within
2 years it may be worth holding out and actually pic up a gt1 though. I see them talking about V39. That software is pretty old,, we're up to cd 50 now and V51 will be out shortly.

I'm confused about how you comunicate with the vehicle though with no DK or OPPS heads. I don't forsee how this would work with all of our D-can vehicles now either.

What would perhaps be easier is for someone to post their VMware hdd image it already installed. I finished the install of mine last night which was fairly straight foward but of course without the head/s it was just an exercise to see if I could do it.


I would do it but I only have 1500kb down and 256k up... hardly useful :(.

Anyone out there that can help those that are having problems with the instructions?

i setup the VMware bit ok and it works fine but when i tried the installation of the GT1 software i got to the bit where it was insert the GT1 base cd and i rebooted, however when it came back on it said unable to initializse hard drisks and says system haulted.

Do i need the custom floppy disk to get this bit to work as per the questiona bove.

I am a step closer now, if i configure my vmware to have a ide primary master hdd and a primary slave cdrom, those harddisk partitioning errors doesnt come up, but after initializing runlevel 2, i get only the message that wd1 is running in pooling mode ( i assume that wd is the ide driver and he access the disk in PIO mode)

With regard to the installation which boot image did you load in part 6 of the installation

4. Create an image of the V39 GT1 Base CD on your desktop.
5. open it with ultra ISO
6. load the supplied Boot image (bootable/load image) and save the updated image.
7. Burn the CD (or not if you are using images)
8. load the CD in to the PC and boot of the base CD-ROM.

THis isnt the problme I ham having, it boots from the CD/image fine but asks for root disk to be inserted.

Its sections 4-6 in my earlier post I am having troubles with. I have the V39 GT1 Base CD, but not sure what files to use to "load the supplied Boot image (bootable/load image)"

So I setup my VM as the directions say. 20gigs, primary ide etc..
I'm using VMware 6.5.

I've got V1.1 and v39 installing fine but when I pop V19 "boot" disk in (before v19 Root disk) I get this message at the end.

Seems like I've run out of HD space or something? The laptop has 38Gigs and I set the VM to 20gigs. When I check the 20gigs under the VM settings, it looks like it seperates the 20gigs into 4 sections and it's trying to load everything on a 7mb section of it?? Any suggestions?

If I can get it fully installed I'll upload all the files and an easier to understand walkthru to rapidshare.

I also have access to every new cd as it comes out, so I can post those as well..

i installed progman last nite on a external drive for fun, make sure your drive is fat32 or fat, i used 80gb, i had the same error as you, my laptop drive is ntfs format,. and only 31gb free, am going to partition it and see what happens.. i also used a diff walkthrough.

but it i reboot the vm-machine the after boot, appear only arrow mouse and blank screen... why don't start?

sow we are at the unix prompt. This is because we need direct access to the hard drive to alter the root account so we can use this software and remove drivers and problematic pieces of software. Put the ‘custom disk’ in the floppy drive.

This was a good thread if you want to learn some basic operating system / Vmware stuff but what are you going to do with the system once it's up and running?

But you need the "yellow" multiplexer which are going for ~ $600-$1000 for orignal and clones.

Your better off getting the Carsoft 6.5SP1 app and the multiplexer on Ebay if you can find one.

So I am not sure if I took the right file or not.

I have here: BMW DISplus base V39, BMW DIS Progman V39 and 2 update files. I can activate the cd with the update files. But not the other.

Trying to install the GT1 with the guide by shoulders I have problems with the custom floppy disc.Have a file that is called CD3(guess this is the custom floppy?) and it is in .nrg format,so SCO does not read it!

Press the Windows button on the keyboard and this will clear the calibration screen and allow you to continue.

Yes, you use the boot disk to get into the system and set the root password but usually the Windows key trick gets you through the calibration stage.

Hi I have a question that maybe someone can help me with.

I installed the Vmware, disk V1.1, reimaged the V39 boot image with the v39boot file, but after i boot the updated v39base cd i get a message to insert "root filesystem floppy". Which filename is this? I am assuming I load it as an image in the "floppy" drive. Any help would be much appreciated.

The disk is the Free BSD Unix boot disk. This allows you into the system you have set up by effectively booting up a different system. Therefore things like root password & rights can be changed etc.


I managed to get passed the calibration screen with Ctrl Windows and Enter.

After you start the VMware machine, load the snapshot you took of the system, it will reboot using the defaults applicable when the snapshot was taken.

Handor, enable your PM's and email or you could be waiting a long time for an answer.

Yes I have installed DIS/GT1 and the software is working but I am experiencing network problems (i.e. is failing the API test). VMware does not appear to want to communicate with XP SP3.

I'm using my macbook, booting it into windows xp sp3 and with vmware loaded all works, it detects the diaghead but it failts to communicate... Like it WILL NOT connect....

I have rectified my comms errors and now have DIS/GT1v44 working well with my BMWECU.Org ADS4 interface. I ran the setup using EasyDis, which assumes that your computer communicates via Bus 0 - mine does not. I deleted the AMD PCI Adapter Compatible (Hardware settings Bus #0, Device #17, Function #0 - Protocol Hostname gt1ap, IP 192.168.68.30, Subnet 255.255.255.0, Broadcast address 192.168.68.255) and reinstalled the first AMD PC1 Adapter Compatible found on my computer (Hardware settings Bus #2, Device #0, Function #0), which I then configured with the Protocol settings above and all works 100%. No network comms seems to be the big issue with getting DIS to work and I think this may be the solution.

You can download the virtual diagnostic head from the internet and get Inpa installed so you can use the IFHSrv32.exe

You can use the yellowhead if you want to spend big bucks.

Cables can be purchased from eBay.

Better way to go is download easyDis44 and follow the instructions in this forum.

I've install GT1/DIS finally but I haven't got it working with hardware yet... Failing APItest: but I just wanted to share my experiences thus far.


1. You must follow the guide by shoulders letter for letter. I'm a software engineer and it's taken me weeks. I must point out I'm not very good at following instructions.

2. In VMWare when booting from "BMW Install CD GT1 V1.1.nrg":
Disk partition error seemed to go when I set to hard disk size (pre-allocated) to 18.65GB this could have been a coincidence but stick at it! It does work.

3. Once you've swapped to the "BMW GT1 Base V39", it reboots about 3 or 4 times before installing. This means that each time it restarts you've got to (in VMware at least) press ESC and select boot from CD. I missed this and it just leaves you with a blank curser after its restarted unless you boot from CD

4. If the password doesn't work when you CTRL+ALT+F1 at the touch-screen calibration stage that's because the previous step (Shadowfile Copy) didn't work or was skipped.
The typically aquired package is a bit messy and could do with a bit of housecleaning but you will find in it a file called "custom image.img" this is in zip/rar file in the DOCS section. You need to unpack it and load it as the floppy in VMware. Then do the instructions as per SHOULDERS.


Then hopefully you're on a home straight or at least have to figure out how to get the hardware communicating with your car ;)

Sorry, but setting up DIS is the easy part, getting the API Test to pass is normally far more difficult. Save yourself some grief and read the setup guides in the stickies section of the forum.

Sorry, but setting up DIS is the easy part, getting the API Test to pass is normally far more difficult. Save yourself some grief and read the setup guides in the stickies section of the forum.

2. In VMWare when booting from "BMW Install CD GT1 V1.1.nrg":
Disk partition error seemed to go when I set to hard disk size (pre-allocated) to 18.65GB this could have been a coincidence but stick at it! It does work.


SO YOU SET YOUR HD SIZE TO 18.65GB NOT 20GB LIKE SHOULDERS AND fix THE PARTITION PROBLEM?

I found a torrent of the software and ordered the cables today. I recently repaired a DAS laptop for a Mercedes repair shop and made a working clone for them. I have no idea how to use it, because I don't own a Mercedes. I got paid and no call backs so it must have worked. I repair computers for a living.

Now I will attempt to make a BMW computer, I will probably be successful. This is the file I found. It downloads really fast @2.9 mbps. Its 5 gb. You must know how to use torrents, WinRar, and PowerISO or Damon tools to use this file.
You must PM me to get the link. I can't post the link here for some reason. Or search BMW DIS on kickass torrents. It few weeks i will post my result if i was successful. I will probably made an other youtube howto vid on it.

How do I PM you? There is no option. Where did you get your cables?

I was not able to make it work on my laptop. The file I had was a vmware image.
The file woks but not on my laptop, because i don' have a chip that supports vt.
I got the cables from ebay, but again I was not able to find a copy that was not vmware.
To use vmware you need a cpu that will support virtualization.

A native installation of DIS is only working on a T30 IBM Notebook. One of the features you need are the right network adapters inside. You have to use a EDIC or OPS head to work with it. Pro for the T30 version with EDIC head, not any connection problems with E36 types or any other old models before. Contra, coding only via SSS Progman, but the software is on the same HDD because of a second boot section. For this version you will need a power distribution who is capable to drive a voltage about 13.2 while you are coding the car. The VMware version is working too, you can ceate the version with coding and diag I mean V44 base and V57 diag , I made one three years ago complete new. It is not easy to change the language without the original CD´s, and in some cases I had small problems to work with the service funtion on a E38 M73TU DME. For easy things I like the VMWare version, because of the very easy coding procedure.
