I need to know all possible about CAN Bus on BMW E36 and Z3.
I need to know especially if with it the ECU can send km/h or rpms to the instrument cluster.
In my 318iS E36 (M44 engine), CAN is used only from ABS to ECU (pins 86&87 of ecu), but in Z3 (s54 engine) it's used with ABS, ECU and Instrument Cluster(from same ecu pins). So I'm trying to fit a Z3 ///M CAN instrument cluster in my 318is that doesn't have a CAN cluster oem, but it have CAN in ECU and pinouts.
I try to explane better what I'll do.
318is oem cluster have a speed input directly from ecu.
Z3 ///M cluster doesn't have a speed input like 318is, but it take signal from CAN.
I'll remove the 318is cluster.
I'll splice a wire to CAN high and another to CAN low in the ECU, and I connect it to the CAN pins of Z3 cluster.
Will it works for you?
please if you have doku about this, post it here,
thanks.

I don't think there is goin to be anyway to get that to work because the other modules on the bus system do not have an address for the cluster even if they did the communication protocal is different because of the difference in generation add to that that the v.o. (vechile order) what is all the infromation about the car is stored in the cluster is not goin to match the new cluster and if u tried to get coded anywhere it would not work because the diagnostic machine would not recognise the cluster

hey nv, i think you're facing somewhat of a similar issue i had when trying to do the m5 cluster retrofit. did you try coding the cluster? i tried to code the m5 one(used cluster) with progman but it wouldnt take the coding. i have talked to a guy who has successfully coded a used m5 cluster in an 97 e39. he however, used pre v44 gt1 software. the dis/gt1 had more coding options than progman. what model year and production date is your 318? i'll find a cluster wiring diagram for you.

Once a cluster is coded it's married to that car. On e39's try swapping the lamp module and cluster from an m5.

Hello,
Did you manage to get this cluster to work?
I am trying to do the same!!!
I have a s54 cluster like the one you had and I am trying to put it to a e36 1997 m3...
When I put the cluster in the car the RPM meter and the temp gauge do not work!!!
So did you get it to work?
If yes, how did you do it?
Thanks

After a few years i'm pulling this thread back to life ;)Did anybody manage to get it working in an e36?I've got a Cluster of a MY'99 e46 and want to put it in an E36.My thoughts were also to splice DME Lines 85/86 to connect it to the Cluster CAN In-/Output.

Is it manual or auto?
What car have you got? If it's a 328i, have a look in INPA to see if the CANbus is active, it is on the first "digital 1" status page.
Just try the wire connections and see what happens. You can often code the clusters to tell them where to look for a signal.
Late 318ti compacts would take a temp reading from CAN, you might be able to select different different functions and see which work.
If you can't get a CAN signal, and CANbus is inactive, try a 120 Ohm resistor across the CAN pins, that might wake the system up, or you can also plug the ECU into an automatic, it'll detect the EGS and switch the CANbus on.
You might get stuck with an "EGS CAN timeout" error, but you can ignore it.

Its automatic, M52B20. The error EGS CAN timeout appears already now sometimes.
I will try as you said on my car on sunday. Will report with some pics then.
Thx

OK, well you should have an CAN output, you'll want to find the power, ground and kl15-ignition on pins on the clocks, plug it in and see what happens.
The default for the temp if it doesn't get a signal is hot, so if it goes high, it isn't working.

Yesterday i pulled a new wire connection from the ECU to the interiour, finished a adapter for the original cluster plugs to E46 plugs and today i will try to put everything together.
I will Report about the result this evening.
