Recently i just got my car back from the shop, i needed some little stuff done and i didnt have the time anyways ended up being 800 in the end.

so today im driving along and i hear that my engine is ticking like it does when the oil gets low, so i figured its a lifter ill pick up some oil on the way home. as im driving my oil pressure light comes on and at this point im less than a mile away from the store to pick up oil. so now im wondering why my light is on, so i put 2 quarts of oil in and the ticking still doesnt go away and at this time it sounds like a desiel truck, so im thinking vanos or something. So instead of messing my car up more than it probably already is i got a truck to tow it to the shop...what does bmw stand for again Bring Money With you or Broke Most Weekdays ha

if you have any suggestions to what this might be let me hear it

Problems are...Oil pressure light, ticking, sounds like a truck

the good news...the engine temp is fine, idled fine, and started up fine and no griding noises, no white smoke, no bad smells...

Do they usually come off with normal driving, i thought it was more of if you money shifted. And if it was that how much damage do you thing was done from just driving to a point where i go it towed from? I guess how fast does the damage occur?

Once you loose oil pressure, it only takes a few minutes for rod bearings to fail.

Out of curiosity, how many miles are on your car?

I doubt mine has ever been welded but I'm at 140K now. I have a feeling if it were to happen it should have by now for me.

turns out the engine is fine, yes the oil pump nut did come off, the pump is fine and the bearings are fine and the engine still runs like it did before...i guess i got lucky

Oil pump nut. Don't start or drive the car.

Looks like Art was right. Glad to hear it was not worse. You got lucky.

How did they fix the nut to prevent this from happening again, weld it, safety wire it?

safety wire, its w/e bimmer world sells, my advice anyone who hasnt welded or safety wire go ahead and get it out of the way, and if you have ever misshifted the car and it didnt destroy your engine go ahead and take care of this, i have never misshifted, but the shop also tells me that just letting off at redline and engine braking can do it over time, and once it gets loose it only gets worse over time

How many people on here have survived from this?

Will JB Weld work on it, or does it need to REALLY be on there? I need to choose a weekend and do this.

i would imagine it would work, the guy at the shop said that track cars and sometimes cars with more power have a tendency to spin the nut because of the reverse torque on the engine after you let off or if you mis shifted. I think the best way to fix this is by safety wire and that way you dont have to weld near this nut and screw because the heat could make the parts more brittle
