Hi, I posted pictures of my "drift incident" some weeks ago, well, I got an used axle (output shaft) from a 1995 US Spec M3, but it turns out to be very different.... than mine (eurospec 1993 M3)
http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/7632/img00957bm7.jpg
As you can see, mine (the damaged one) is thicker...
http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/5748/img00958qc0.jpg
how can they be so different ?

:(
So, does anybody know if 96+ US specs have a different output shaft ?

Because everything is better on the Euro M3.
geez.
another reason to add to the long list of why we in the U.S do NOT have a true m3.

Its sad isn't it?
The US never seems to get the good versions of Euro or Japanese models.

Now how do we go about getting some Euro half shafts for our US spec cars? Those things look beefy.

Yes, but then look to getting a Euro differential and wheel spindles just to make those half shafts work.
Because everything is better on the Euro M3.
Exactly. We got a cracked out 325...they get an M3

Japanese models.
At least we dont get limited HP numbers like in japan... what is it 287hp??

To the OP, when I removed my axles recently they looked like yours, the "beefier" ones. I believe it's due to '96+ axles being hollow vs. '95 solid. So the newer ones are hollow and thicker to make up for strength...

Are you referring to the gentlemans agreement between the Japanese manufacturers that limited engine power to 276 HP? I thought that agreement no longer applied.

Maybe but you can't complain much because you didn't pay the value of a "true" M3.

Could you please tell me whats the part number for your axles ? :help
Thank you very much.

Man, I gotta say this bitching gets really old. If you think your car is so deficient, sell it and drive something else.
How about a little love for what they are, not what they aren't? Better than 90% of what's on the road today, 11 years after introduction.

go to a different forum then

Maybe we dont get "true M3 " because our roads are not even close to what they have in Germany or Japan. I been in Germany and i have seen quality of those roads and here in NYC roads are something like Iraqi Streets. I am thinking of putting my M3 off the road because i spent $11000 cash for my M3 and car is taking pure beating on the streets of NYC. Here nothing is made to last. It is all about wearing out quick and buying new. It is called CAPITALISAM !!!
Sorry for going off the subject , but some may get my point !!!

i consider my car just an e36 3 series.
i cant call it an m3. not yet at least. :devillook

Actually, the elitism of your average M owner is what gets old. This bitching would do the M community some good. It would bring the price of aftermarket parts down to a realistic level.
Think of it as hondafying, or dsming the e36 community. Everything is cheap as shit because they know they have cheap as shit cars. But that doesn't mean shitty cars.

I don't think that was the cause... the roads in my country are worse than anything in the US and we did get the true M3.
As far as I've read, BMW NA thought northamericans wouldn't want to pay the price of the true M3.

It might not be the same engine, but is also cost at least $10K less, than if it were the same.
At the time I bought it in 95, if it had been the same, and cost $50K, I would have paid $5K more and gotten a 911. It didn't, (it cost $40K out the door) and I didn't, and I have never regretted it.

There are a few importers on the forums, try looking around the E36 M3 Eurospec forums, or even make a post showng what you're looking for.
*EDIT* I see you already did that. Well, good luck on finding the shaft!

I'm pretty sure that 97+ runs a larger diameter output shaft...I have them on my car and they are significantly thicker than my original 95 shafts...
Rest assured, "gentlemen", there are many of us who have long ago grown
weary of the whining about US-spec E36 M3s.
Chances are, you would *not* have bought an M3 8-12 years ago if it was
available configured like the European model. What was your income then?
What do you think it would sell for now? Certainly more than you paid for
your current ride!
Like the man said, "If you don't like the car, sell it!". Get something else.
How about that 300hp WRX? How about a 'Vette? Go buy a Porsche then
whine about the co$t of parts & labor (cause you're not gonna be able to
work on it yourself!).

To the OP.
I believe that the problem you have is NOT that you've got a difference between US spec axles (output shafts or driveshafts as you may call them), but rather, you've been sent a 325 or 318 axle by mistake.
Try hard to clean it up, look for part numbers to confirm.
The euro spec M3 3.0 car used the same differential ours. It used the same trailing arms we got, and the wheel bearings are the same etc... there is no reason that the axles would not interchange.
Good luck.

Thanks Alex, thats what ive been thinking about, I recently bought a trailing arm and wheel bearings, and they were the same as on the US Spec 1995 M3, damn I got scammed then :(

There are indeed 2 axle half shafts. PN 33 21 2 228 156 for the US. Both have 94mm flange faces. The some in the US got the 27mm shaft. The Euro is 38mm PN 33 21 2 228 513
Realoem as does the EKT lists both parts for US cars. Leads me to believe that it might have been a production change.
