I have a friend with all the tools and materials to build a custom exhaust for me. What do you guys think would be the best route to go? I have no idea how to get the sound that I want. (deep and really loud and WOT, but not so loud at cruising) What size pipe would I use?Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks:D

Chris.

A couple of people within the last few months have done this.
Do a search.

Good god that would make less power than stock.

I second that and it would sound like a "butt"

If your FI then its a no brainer...but if your not FI why the hell would you go with a 3" exhaust?

Because it will make more power.

Please don't argue with me, just accept it. I really don't want to have to type it all out again.

If you want it light and simple run a Y-pipe two 2.25" to one 3", continue with some 3" pipe and end it with a resonated aero turbine, should give you the results you'd like.

With BMW running two 2-2.25 pipes all the way back, one 3" pipe will probably flow about the same, especially since it's well after the backpressure sections of the exhaust anyway.

I disagree with you :)

That's fine. You're welcome to do that.

Some day you'll learn.

Do a search for my first thread and you'll find pictures on the first page.

"New E36 Owner" I think is the title.

Do a 3" pipe into a resonator then all the way back to a muffler :)

The flip side of the coin is that your custom exhaust would have little, if any, resale value.

Fun project, zero returns.

Buy a used AA/Borla/Einz/Dinan instead?

who resells exhausts?

Very seldom do performance parts have much resale value anyway...

Exactly.....hence: why buying a used aa/borla/dinan/einz makes sense financially. Let the other guy take the hit and then you hold some residual value (minus the value of your time of course).

Any thoughts on this idea? :help

Making a custom catback would be pretty easy. There isn't much bending involved for the E36 M3 and if you were gonna do it yourself I would make myself a mid pipe as well. Get some highflow cats and get rid the resonators if you want it louder.

You could get a Magnaflow muffler or you could get a universal muffler of your choosing. All you would need to to is just have the piping bent to the proper angle and weld it up. If you have all the tools I would think you could do this on a saturday afternoon.
